You can know a local business for years and still walk in and discover something new.

We recently stopped in for a visit with Lulu and Sherry at Chemainus Health Food Store, a longtime Chemainus business that has been part of our community since 2006, under their ownership since 2007.

There is a LOT packed into this little shop. Specialty foods, pantry staples, organic produce and dairy, vitamins and supplements, natural body and household products, clothing made from ecofriendly fabrics, locally made goodies, lots of healthy options including a refillery!

The idea is wonderfully simple: bring in your own reusable bottle or container, refill it with what you need, and bring it back again.

Less packaging. Less waste. And, as Lulu and Sherry pointed out, when we buy many everyday products, part of what we’re paying for is the bottle, pump, label and packaging. Refilling gives us another option, one that can be kinder to the environment and easier on the wallet.

After nearly two decades in business together, Lulu and Sherry are still finding thoughtful ways to serve their customers and make shopping local a little more interesting.

So if it’s been a while since you’ve wandered into Chemainus Health Food Store, pop in and have a look around.

Fuel the Riders, Fight Cancer, and Grab a Great Lunch! 🚴‍♂️🍲

The Cops for Cancer Tour De Rock team is rolling into town, and Chemainus/Duncan Legion Branch 191 is hosting a community lunch to refuel the riders and raise critical funds for pediatric cancer research.

Join them on Monday, September 28, from 12:00–1:00pm at the Legion (9775 Chemainus Rd).

They will be serving up a warm, homemade soup and sandwich lunch by donation!

Come hungry, bring your support, and let’s show these incredible cyclists the loudest cheer on Vancouver Island! ❤️

This event is open to everyone in our community. It’s a great opportunity to hear directly from the candidates, learn about their platforms, and make an informed decision ahead of General Voting Day.

What do physics, painting, sport, music and fitness have in common? In Chemainus, the answer is Chrissy Kemppi.

Meet one of our members: The Shining Tree Studio

Our Executive Director recently spent some time with Chrissy in her studio, and it quickly became clear that this is a small business shaped by a pretty remarkable mix of experience.

Chrissy grew up in northern Ontario with sport as a big part of her life, and later became a teacher, teaching physics, math and physical education.

That analytical mind is still very much part of how she approaches fitness today.
But there’s another side to Chrissy too. She paints. She plays music. She acts. She’s creative, thoughtful and brings a spiritual dimension to the way she looks at wellness and the people she works with.

Around The Shining Tree Studio’s logo are three simple phrases:
BE ADAPTABLE.
BE RESILIENT.
BE BLESSED.

And they tell you quite a bit about the spirit of the place.

Chrissy’s boutique studio works with adults 18+ and offers personal training, healthy eating and body composition coaching, yoga, kickboxing, strength training, group fitness and periodic wellness workshops. Most services are available both in-studio and by livestream, with modifications made to suit different fitness levels.
So whether you’ve been active for years, are finding your way back to fitness, or simply want some knowledgeable guidance from someone who will actually pay attention to the person in front of her, The Shining Tree Studio is worth getting to know.
