🍁Canada Day in Chemainus is shaping up to be a fantastic community celebration! 🍁

What happens when local organizations, volunteers, musicians, performers, and community groups all come together? A pretty fantastic Canada Day celebration.

Recently, the Chemainus + District Chamber of Commerce met with members of the Canada Day Committee, including Bev Knight (CVAS), Ron Waller (Chemainus Valley Historical Society), and Steve Smith (Royal Canadian Legion Branch 191), to hear about the exciting plans for July 1.

This year's celebration at Waterwheel Park, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, will feature performances by the Smutuq'sun Smune'ems Dance Group from Penelakut, live music, face painting, community displays, burgers, sweet treats, Canada Day cake, family activities, and much, much more!

The Chamber's Wednesday Market will also be taking place alongside the festivities, bringing local artisans, makers, bakers, growers, and small businesses into the heart of the celebration.

A big thank you to the Canada Day Committee and the many volunteers and organizations working together behind the scenes to make this event possible. We love seeing our community come together!

The Chemainus Spanish Club is hosting its very first Meet & Greet! Whether you're a fluent speaker or just starting out with "hola," all levels are absolutely welcome. It’s a completely friendly and relaxed environment.

It’s Coming Down! 🌲

When European settlers first arrived in Chemainus, this entire area was a breathtaking, untouched forest. Imagine looking up and seeing nothing but majestic giants—trees towering over 300 feet tall!

We recently received a notice from the Municipality of North Cowichan regarding one of the remaining links to that towering history. The grand fir located in Waterwheel Park, directly behind the Chemainus Museum, has been assessed and is unfortunately in declining health. While the municipality notes it doesn't pose an immediate risk, they have recommended its removal as a proactive safety measure.

Before this grand tree comes down, we encourage you to come on down to Waterwheel Park, take a look, and appreciate a piece of our living landscape.

While you're here, make sure to pop into the Visitor Centre to say hello, and head over to the museum to chat with Ron Waller, a longtime resident and President of the Chemainus Valley Historical Society. Ron has a wealth of knowledge about our town’s deep roots, the logging history, and what this beautiful land looked like generations ago.

A specific removal date hasn't been set by North Cowichan just yet, so come enjoy the park, step back in time at the museum, and share your own memories of our local landmarks with us. See you soon! 👋

🌸 You never really know what you’re going to see outside the Visitor Centre in Chemainus.

Today, David Lambert from the Chemainus Heritage Museum Society stopped by with a brilliantly homemade watering system to tackle the hanging baskets outside the building. Using a custom-built setup with a pump, battery, tubing, and an extendable pole, he was able to water the baskets safely and efficiently without hauling ladders through the walkway.

Ingenious, practical, and very Chemainus!

The beautiful hanging baskets themselves are compliments of the Chemainus BIA, whose work helps keep downtown vibrant and welcoming throughout the summer season.

A big thank you to David for lending a hand and bringing a little creative problem-solving to the day.

A beautiful piece of Chemainus history! 🎨✨

Did you know the story behind this incredible sculpture? Commissioned around 1990 by locals Neil Newton and Dianne Hopkins, this stunning piece is a deeply personal tribute.

It was actually created using a series of "walk-around" photos of Neil’s parents, Yvonne and Tom Newton, to capture them from every angle. Crafted from a unique blend of resin mixed with bronze particles, it was finished with hand-coloured acrylic paint to bring it to life.
