Porcupine River Stingray (Potamotrygon histrix). My second new species from the Ibera Wetlands in northern Argentina. This is a great area for freshwater stingrays. I actually photographed four species of rays, but only two of them were new to me.
Now I am heading to the Guianas to try to track down a couple more species. Exciting!

I have just wrapped up a great sharksandrays.com expedition in the Ibera Wetlands in northern Argentina. The mission was to photograph two new species of freshwater stingrays. It wasn't the easiest trip I have done - cold, dark, low viz conditions in the river, no luggage, communication difficulties, etc, etc, but it all came together in the end.
My latest ray is the Giant Freshwater Stingray also known as the Short-tailed River Ray (Potamotrygon brachyura).
Many thanks to for the dive support and for being my dive buddy for the first 30 seconds of every dive until we lost each other in the gloom 😂

A huge Yacare Caiman in the Rio Corrientes, Argentina.
Thought it was a black caiman but I guess they don't live this far south.
I was river diving in search of freshwater stingrays. This guy gave me quite a fright when it materialized out of the gloom. Hard to say how big he was, but he looked bigger than me! The strong current pushed me straight towards him, so I skirted him as best I could, and then kicked like mad to stay just in front of his nose while I rattled off a dozen images and a shaky GoPro video. We stayed frozen in that position for a couple of minutes; me marveling at his girth while barely holding position against the pull of the river, him glued to the bottom eyeing me warily. Then, with a crack of his powerful tail he exploded from the substrate and headed upstream in a cloud of silt. A few minutes later, I surfaced and decided to call it a day. Another epic encounter in South America!

Late in the afternoon, a jaguar named Saseka came tearing out of the bush and nailed a green iguana that was hidden in the grass by the shore. Predator and prey slammed into the water and a few seconds later, Saseka resurfaced with the iguana’s limp form hanging from her mouth by its head.
Saseka has a cub to feed, but this was barely a snack so she devoured the iguana which would give her a nice injection of energy to help her continue hunting for a more substantial meal for her family.
She must have heard movement in the undergrowth because after her appetizer, she started digging. A minute later she held up a Guinea Pig in her jaws and trotted off into the bush to deliver lunch to her cub, which must have been hiding near by.
Shortly afterwards, she rematerialized and continued hunting along the shore.

A newborn Black and Gold Howler Monkey, grips his mom's back fur to avoid falling. When this little guy tried to reposition himself or look around, he looked very wobbly and unsteady, but of course his little hands are perfectly designed to never fail him, plus his prehensile tail was always wrapped around his mom's tail so he wasn't in any danger.
