I have kept you all in suspense for long enough! Last week we had a WILD adventure on our SUP tour.

During my safety talk, I always remind my guests that we share this space with a multitude of beings. Some are fun to paddleboard with and others not so much.

We are called the Polar Bear Capital of the World for a reason, and polar bears swim. We have a safety protocol if we happen to find ourselves sharing the river with a bear and our guests are briefed on what to do if we find ourselves in that situation. It is rare that this happens.

On this particular day, we had not only 1, but FOUR different bears in the water during our 2 hours on tour.

Everyone who paddles on the Churchill River should be aware of this as a potential safety risk and have a solid plan in place. Polar bears can also be on the shoreline when you exit the water, so being bear aware at all times is crucial.

SUP North partners with not only because of the level of safety and professionalism they ensure for our guests but also because they care about the wildlife. We had a safe, fun and exciting experience because of that partnership and the bears were not harmed or disturbed in the water.

It was a day that my guests and I will never forget.

On June 27th, we held our annual Hudson Bay Shoreline cleanup.

48 passionate volunteers picked up:
246 pounds of trash

1,983 cigarette butts
321 glass pieces
212 construction material pieces
205 pieces of cardboard/paper
203 hard plastic pieces
121 beverage cans
91 soft plastic pieces
59 food wrappers
34 styrofoam pieces
30 shotgun shells
29 plastic bottles
Those are just the top categories.

And this is our 9th year cleaning the exact same strip of coastline. (Less than 1 km long.)

Thank you to all the volunteers who collected litter and data, to our bear guards ( ), our sponsors and , Manitoba Conservation and Polar Bear Alert.
It takes a village to put on a successful cleanup and I am so grateful to all of you for your dedication and efforts in making a positive impact on our coastal ecosystems.
Let’s continue the good work by considering how our actions can influence positive change in our daily lives to reduce waste and protect the land, the water and the earthlings that we share this space with.
