THE LIGHTS ARE RAMPING UP

September is a perfect time to experience the aurora in Churchill. The nights are longer, offering more opportunities to enjoy the aurora’s mystery and magic before colder weather sets in.

Lazy Bear Expeditions Ultimate Northern Lights Photo Adventure brings aurora-seekers from around the world to witness—and photograph—Aurora’s nightly dance of light and colour.

Want to go deeper? Our Ultimate Northern Lights Solar Science Adventure explores the science, stories and Indigenous perspectives behind this extraordinary phenomenon.

Our September 20–26 adventure also includes the fall equinox on September 22, a time of seasonal change and harvest celebrations.

Then, from October through November, Churchill’s other great spectacle takes centre stage: polar bears gathering on the tundra, waiting for Hudson Bay to freeze.

It’s all here in Churchill—the polar bear and Northern Lights capital of the world.

THE ARCTIC KINGDOM OF ICE AND FIRE

Few places on Earth immerse you in a kingdom quite like the Arctic—a world of ice beneath your feet and fire blazing across the sky.

And this kingdom has its kings and queens.

Polar bears rule here—the Arctic’s apex predator and the worlds’ largest land carnivore.

This may sound like something from a dream were it not for what Lazy Bear Expeditions guests witness each October and November: powerful adult males, mothers with cubs, and other Arctic wildlife.

And while the bears wait for the return of the sea ice, another spectacle unfolds above them.

The northern lights ignite the dark Arctic sky.

Science tells us that charged particles from the sun interact with Earth’s magnetic field to create the aurora. Indigenous people share their own understanding of these lights—stories of ancestors dancing in the sky, or caribou running through the night, their fur creating sparks of light.

Different ways of understanding. One extraordinary sky.

Polar bears below. Northern lights above.

Ice and fire.

There are proposals… and then there are proposals Lazy Bear style. 💍🌸

Surrounded by the wild beauty of Churchill and a sea of fireweed, Lazy Bear Expeditions Head Guide Deacon found the perfect place to ask one very important question.

And she said YES! ❤️

We couldn’t be happier for the two of them as they begin their next adventure together.

And yes, for those looking closely — that’s a shotgun on Deacon’s back...for polar bear safety, not to influence the answer! 😂🐻‍❄️

Congratulations to the happy couple! A pretty perfect proposal in Canada’s Real North.

THE GREATEST ARC WHEN WATCHING AN AURORA

The Northern Lights have inspired awe for thousands of years. Its ever-changing colours, patterns, and arcs of light paint a nightly layer of wonder across already brilliant night skies.

Yet the greatest arc is the one traced across our hearts, leaving grateful tears and memories that never fade.

The foreground in this image is the Churchill Radar Station, used in the 1960s to track launches from a nearby American-Canadian rocket range. Closed and abandoned in 1985, the exterior building now bears a mural painted by Jason Botkin that pays tribute to the Sayisi Dene First Nation, showing caribou antlers and a person raising their hands in prayer.

In Churchill, the northern lights are about place and culture just as much as they are about sky.

Join us September 2026, and change your stars!

THE GREAT POLAR BEAR GATHERING BEFORE THE ICE

Imagine a place where, for thousands of years, polar bears—the world's largest land carnivores—have gathered each autumn, guided by an ancient rhythm toward another great gathering: the return of the sea ice to Hudson Bay.

They wait along the shores, watching the first ice spread across the bay, anticipating the season that unlocks their ancestral hunting grounds. Soon, they will venture onto the frozen sea in search of ringed seals—the nourishment that will sustain them through the months ahead and help mothers raise the next generation of Arctic giants.

And yet, there is a third gathering: ours. We come to witness this wilderness wonder, our hearts and minds equally nourished by the rare privilege of seeing an ancient cycle continue—the enduring relationship between polar bears, sea ice and the Arctic.

Welcome to Lazy Bear Expeditions ‘Ultimate Polar Bear Adventure’.

The great polar bear gathering is waiting.

WHERE AUTUMN MEETS THE AURORA

September 22 marks the fall equinox in Canada—the moment when the earth’s axis is neither tilted toward nor away from the sun, bringing nearly equal hours of daylight and darkness.

In Churchill, Manitoba, September is one of the best times to experience the North. With typically lower precipitation and reduced cloud cover, the month offers excellent opportunities to witness the spectacular northern lights. The milder temperatures also make September a comfortable time to enjoy the aurora before winter's colder weather and snow arrive.

From September 20–26, Lazy Bear Expeditions' Ultimate Northern Lights Photo Adventure offers an unforgettable opportunity to experience the magic of the aurora, encounter polar bears and other northern wildlife, and more—all in Churchill, Manitoba, recognized by TIME as one of the World's Greatest Places.

Canada’s Real North is calling you. Will you answer?

Imagine listening to, and learning from, local Indigenous Nations—Inuit, Cree, Métis, and Dene—whose ancestors have lived on and cared for this region for thousands of years.

Many Indigenous stories and traditions tell of the northern lights as the spirits of ancestors or animals, dancing, playing, or racing across the night sky.

Now imagine yourself beneath the aurora—your spirit lifted skyward amid nature’s most spectacular, colorful, and ever-changing phenomenon.

In that moment, you may discover an illumination within that reaches far beyond the sky.
