09/03/2026

Just in time for the cooler days of fall, Category 1 campfires will once again be permitted throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre beginning today, September 3 at noon.

A Category 1 campfire is a fire that is no larger than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide. Fires larger than that are considered Category 2 open fires and remain prohibited.

Still prohibited:
• Category 2 open fires
• Category 3 open fires
• Fireworks
• Binary exploding targets
• Air curtain burners
• Carbonizers
• Controlled air incinerators
• Burn barrels or burn cages, except when used as permitted for a Category 1 campfire

And remember: fire safety is still incredibly important. Even though the campfire prohibition is being lifted, wildfire risk can change quickly. Always check current restrictions before heading out, keep your campfire small and attended and make sure it is completely extinguished before you leave.

Always check current fire restrictions and local regulations before lighting a fire.

A young grizzly bear has been spending time in the Trophy Meadows area. To protect both visitors and the bear, BC Parks has temporarily closed the Trophy Meadows Trail and Sheila Lake campgrounds to give the bear time and space to move safely through the area.

Temporary wildlife closures like this are an important part of protecting the incredible wildlife that calls Wells Gray Provincial Park home. By giving the bear the space it needs, we’re helping to keep both visitors safe and wildlife wild.

While Trophy Meadows takes a temporary break, there are still countless adventures waiting to be explored throughout the park. Why not discover one of these incredible hikes instead?

🥾 Flat Iron Trail
🥾 Clearwater River Recreation Trail
🥾 Dragon’s Tongue
🥾 Pyramid Mountain
🥾 Moul Falls
🥾 Bailey’s Chute

Every trail offers its own unique beauty, from waterfalls and river canyons to panoramic mountain views. If you’d like more ideas on other places to explore in the area stop in at the Wells Gray Visitor Information Centre.

Thank you for respecting the temporary closure and helping protect the wildlife that makes Wells Gray Provincial Park such a special place.
