Travel delays are basically a rite of passage at this point. The difference between a travel hiccup and a vacation meltdown usually comes down to being prepared.
A few things I always recommend:
๐ฑ Download the airline app before you leave and turn on notifications. Quite often you'll know about delays before the gate agents do.
๐ก๏ธ Buy travel insurance. I know, I know, it's not the exciting part of vacation planning or spending. But when something goes sideways, you'll be very happy you have it.
๐ข Never cut it close before a cruise, wedding, or special event. Saving one hotel night isn't worth risking the entire trip.
๐ Know who to call.
โข Airline issues? Start with the airline.
โข Resort questions? Contact the resort.
โข Not sure where to turn? Call your travel advisor. That's literally what we're here for, to help guide you to the right place.
๐ Know your passenger rights. Depending on the reason for the delay, you may be entitled to compensation, meals, accommodations, or rebooking assistance.
And here's the biggest tip of all, take a breath and don't panic.
One of my clients recently had a significant flight disruption that completely changed their travel day. We worked through the options, got everything sorted, and they still ended up having a fantastic vacation. Most travel problems have a solution. The key is staying calm long enough to find it.
Travel isn't always perfect, but it doesn't have to ruin your trip.
Save this post for your next vacation. Hopefully you'll never need it, but if you do, you'll be glad it's there.
