The narwhal might just be one of the most fascinating animals on the planet. Nicknamed the “unicorn of the sea”, these incredible Arctic whales are famous for their long spiral tusk that can grow up to 3 metres long. What looks like a horn is actually an oversized tooth with millions of nerve endings that helps them sense changes in the icy Arctic waters. 🐋❄️

Narwhals spend their lives in some of the harshest environments on Earth, living in the Arctic waters of Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia. During winter, many spend months beneath thick sea ice, surfacing through cracks to breathe. They can dive thousands of feet below the surface searching for fish, squid and shrimp.

One of the wildest facts? Scientists believe narwhals can live for over 100 years, making them one of the longest living marine mammals on Earth. They travel in pods that can range from a handful of whales to hundreds at a time, creating an unforgettable sight in the Arctic wilderness.

Even after all these years of research, narwhals are still considered one of the ocean’s most mysterious animals. Seeing one in the wild would honestly feel like spotting a mythical creature come to life. 🌊🦄

May 23 is International Turtle Day 🐢

Today is all about celebrating one of the coolest travellers on the planet. Sea turtles can migrate thousands of kilometres across the ocean, sometimes returning to the exact same beach where they were born decades earlier. Honestly, that’s some pretty impressive navigation skills 👀

There are only 7 species of sea turtles in the world and sadly 6 of them are considered threatened or endangered. From plastic pollution to fishing nets and disappearing nesting beaches, these incredible animals face a lot of challenges.

One thing I love about travel is getting the chance to see wildlife in their natural environment, and spotting turtles while snorkeling or diving is always such a special moment. Whether it’s in the Caribbean, the Maldives, Australia, Costa Rica or the Galápagos, seeing one glide through the water never gets old.

If you’re travelling to destinations with turtles, remember to admire them respectfully. Keep your distance, avoid touching them, and support eco friendly tours and conservation programs whenever possible. Small actions really do make a difference.

Have you ever seen turtles in the wild? Where was your favourite encounter? 🐢🌎

T-Minus 12 hours

One of the biggest reasons I am SO excited for my upcoming Arctic expedition to Svalbard… the wildlife ❄️🐻‍❄️

This region is one of the best places on Earth to see Arctic animals in the wild, and honestly, every day feels like it could turn into a real life National Geographic moment.

Of course, the big dream sighting is a polar bear. Svalbard is one of the top places in the world to safely see them roaming across sea ice or walking along glacier fronts in their natural environment.

But the wildlife here goes far beyond just polar bears.

Walruses are commonly spotted hauled out on beaches and ice floes in huge groups, while Svalbard reindeer wander the tundra across the islands. These reindeer actually look very different from mainland ones, shorter, stockier and built for Arctic survival.

I’m also hoping to spot Arctic foxes moving through the rocky terrain near bird cliffs searching for food.

And then there’s the marine life…

The waters around Svalbard are home to up to 12 marine mammal species. Humpback whales and Minke whales are some of the more common sightings, but there’s also a chance to see Beluga whales, Fin whales, Orcas and even the elusive Narwhal if luck is on our side.

Seals are another regular sighting throughout the expedition. Ringed seals, Bearded seals and Harbor seals are often seen resting on floating ice or swimming through the fjords.

Then there are the birds… and there are MILLIONS of them.

The towering bird cliffs around Svalbard absolutely explode with life during the summer months. Puffins, Little Auks, Guillemots, Kittiwakes, Arctic Terns and Skuas fill the skies nonstop.

What I love most about this kind of travel is that nothing is staged. No fences. No guarantees. Just raw nature in one of the most remote places on the planet.

And in just a couple of days, I’ll be experiencing all of this firsthand with Quark Expeditions aboard the Ultramarine.

Honestly… I cannot wait 🐋🦭❄️

To celebrate the company’s 130 years of polar exploration, HX Expeditions has transformed cabin 428 onboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen into a recreation of a historic expedition cabin from 1896. Complete with an oil lantern, wood burning stove, an old rifle, and other authentic historic props, the cabin offers travellers a glimpse into the earliest days of polar expedition travel.

Guests can book a night in the 1896 Heritage Cabin during their expedition voyage for a surcharge of €100 per person, creating a unique opportunity to step back in time while exploring some of the world’s most remote regions. All proceeds of the heritage cabin go to charities supported by the HX Foundation.

If you’ve been dreaming about getting to the most remote corners of the planet, this is the kind of news that gets me excited to start planning something big.

Douglas Mawson is the newest addition to the Aurora Expeditions fleet, and it’s built for true adventure. Think polar regions, wild coastlines, and those hard to reach places that most travellers will never see.

What I love about this ship is that it keeps things small and immersive. Fewer passengers means more time off the ship exploring, whether that’s zodiac cruising past icebergs, spotting wildlife up close, or stepping onto land in places like Antarctica or the rugged shores of the Arctic.

It’s also designed with sustainability in mind, which is a big step forward for expedition cruising. You get the comfort of a modern ship, but with a lighter footprint and a strong focus on protecting the environments you’re visiting.

This is the kind of travel that sticks with you long after you get home. Raw, real, and completely different from your typical vacation.

If exploring the ends of the earth has been on your list, this might be your sign to finally make it happen. Reach out and let’s start putting something together that you’ll be talking about for years. 🌍

Earth Day is a great reminder that the way we travel matters 🌎

As much as I love exploring the world, it’s also about protecting the places we visit so they’re still just as incredible for future travellers.

The good news… travelling more responsibly doesn’t mean sacrificing the experience. It usually makes it better.

Think staying at locally owned hotels, choosing smaller group tours, respecting wildlife by keeping your distance, and supporting local guides and businesses. Even simple things like bringing a reusable water bottle or saying no to single use plastics can make a difference.

Some of my favourite travel moments have come from experiences that are more connected to the destination. Cooking with locals, learning about culture firsthand, or exploring nature in a way that actually gives back to the community.

Earth Day is just a reminder to be a little more mindful about how we explore.

Travel far, but travel responsibly 🌿✈️
