Update: July 13, 2026 โ Please be advised: Following the initial publication of this article July 9th, 2026, DFO issued an amended Fishery Notice (FN0701). This amendment quietly omitted and removed the entire section regarding the sudden treble hook ban and the 22 mm maximum hook gap initially slated for July 15. We have reached out to the DFO Communications Department to ask if this is a permanent reversal or a temporary delay, but we have not yet heard back as of our deadline. Read the article for more.

The sudden ban on salmon treble hooks and the new 22 mm maximum hook gap restriction have left anglers, guides, and local tackle shops completely holding the bag right at peak season.
But here is where the irony gets thicker than mid-summer fog:

UBCโs Salmon Ecology Lab spent five years tracking salmon post-release survival data. Their final report explicitly points out that standard landing nets are the real villains causing lethal scale loss and fin damageโnot trebles on single-hook rigs. Yet, landing nets remain completely unregulated while your terminal tackle just became a liability.
Don't guess your gear dimensions at the boat side and risk a massive compliance fine. Weโve put together a definitive breakdown of what these changes actually mean for your season, a breakdown of the new Cowichan opportunity, and a simple pocket-change trick to verify your hooks are 100% legal before the DFO checks your line.
