Perched dramatically above the waters of St. Mary’s Bay, Balancing Rock is one of Nova Scotia’s most iconic natural wonders.

This slender basalt column, standing approximately 9 meters (30 feet) tall and weighing over 20 tonnes, appears to defy gravity as it balances precariously on the edge of a cliff.

Formed over millions of years through volcanic activity and erosion, Balancing Rock is a testament to the geological forces that have shaped the region.

Balancing Rock is located on Long Island, which is between Digby Neck and Brier Island. To reach Long Island, take Highway 217 west from downtown Digby towards East Ferry on Digby Neck. A short ferry ride across Petit Passage brings you to Tiverton, where the trailhead is just a few minutes drive away.

🎨 Maud Lewis: Capturing Nova Scotia's Spirit Through Art

Maud Lewis (1903–1970), was a self-taught folk artist from South Ohio, Nova Scotia, who transformed her modest surroundings into vibrant masterpieces that encapsulate the essence of rural Maritime life. Despite facing physical challenges due to juvenile arthritis and living in poverty, Maud's unwavering spirit and artistic vision brought joy to many.

Her paintings, characterized by bright colours and simple forms, depicted the everyday scenes she saw in the Digby area: oxen pulling carts, blooming flowers, coastal landscapes, and bustling harbours. These works offer a nostalgic and optimistic view of Nova Scotia's past, celebrating the province's natural beauty and community spirit.

Maud's tiny home in Marshalltown, which she shared with her husband Everett, became both her canvas and studio. She adorned every surface—from walls to doors—with her art, creating an immersive environment that reflected her love for the world around her.

Today, Maud Lewis's legacy persists, inspiring artists and admirers alike. Her work serves as a testament to resilience, creativity, and the enduring spirit of Nova Scotia.

Want to see something 200 million years in the making?

Balancing Rock, also known as Nature’s Time Post, is a 20 foot high basalt rock formation that was created millions of years ago.

Legend has it that back in the day, fishermen would try to use their mighty boats to yank it down. Luckily or us, no one ever did.

Balancing Rock is at the end of a 30 minute hike through the beautiful landscape of Long Island.

At the end of it, you are also treated to beautiful views of St. Mary’s Bay.
