Now here's an interesting find!

These nifty plants are called Purple Prairie Clover (dalea purpurea) and they're extra confusing to ID because they're in the pea family!

These plants can have a taproot that reaches 6 feet long, and like other clover, they help improve the soil as a nitrogen fixer. Check the photos for a quick visual on how these plants work their magic.

Been a tad sidelined this week for hiking and training. I can't think of what I could have done to my knee (aside from having the audacity to turn another year older.)

So, this past week, I just did some lighter walking in lieu of strength and hill training. Sometimes you just need to slow down a bit. Nothing wrong with that, either ✌️

What I carry in my pack as a certified hiking leader

First Aid supplies! As a beginner hiker, it's easy to carry too much in your pack. In my opinion though, a first aid kit isn't something to skimp out on.

Be like a Scout and be prepared--Think about what the biggest risks are on your hike.

Blisters, scrapes, bruises, twisted ankles, and dehydration are a few things that come to mind.

This video doesn't show everything I carry, but it's a good start for those little issues you might encounter on the trail!

Freeze! Did you see me?

Dusky Grouse rely heavily on camouflage instead of flight to protect themselves from predators, but these feisty birds have other tactics. They feign injury to lure predators away from their chicks, but if that fails, they have been known to fly up and strike at large mammals!

These Grouse can be found in mixed “montane” forest areas which feature evergreens and deciduous trees. Lookalikes for this species include Spruce Grouse and Sooty Grouse.

Wild Wednesday-Western Wood Lily

Western Wood Lilies are one of Alberta’s native plant species and can be found starting in mid June. They typically grow a single flower, but can put out two, or rarely, three blooms. The bulb of the plant was historically used as food by some Indigenous peoples and the pollen was even used as seasoning. These plants are very delicate though. Picking or breaking them off results in the loss of the entire plant, so it’s important not to disturb them.
