Krakow, June 7, 2026. Crowds in the Main Market Square, St. Mary’s Basilica in the background, and a colorful procession that took over the city.
This was the 25th anniversary Great Dragon Parade – organized by the Groteska Theatre since 2000. The main parade took place on Sunday at 12:00 PM along the route Planty → Grodzka Street → Main Market Square, and schools from across Małopolska marched in the parade with handmade dragons made of paper, fabric, and plastic. Why do we do this? It’s not just a tourist show. The whole parade is rooted in the legend of the Wawel Dragon – Krakow’s symbol for centuries. The dragon once lived in a cave under Wawel Castle until a clever shoemaker named Skuba outwitted him. Today Krakow doesn’t fear the dragon, it celebrates him. That’s why every first weekend of June the city turns into a living legend.
