Brookside PEI

Brookside PEI NOTE only suite 1 and 2 are available Summer of 2019.

Brookside Housekeeping Apartments came from former Grocery made into 3 handicapped accessible units and 1 upstairs Make us your tourist base of operations on PEI. Named because of the stream that runs just behind the building, Brookside is a set of fully handicapped accessible housekeeping suites with full kitchens, 2 bedrooms with one queen bed each, 3-piece bathrooms with mandated handicapped fa

cilities, a living/dining area, and a deck with BBQ. About 2 miles from the ferry dock, there is a trail that leads down to the stream that is just behind the building and includes two bridges. Located in the less-crowded southeast part of the island with four lighthouses and numerous beaches, a unit makes a great base of operations for touring Prince Edward Island.

I'm finally putting up gutters above the remaining decks where the rain would come off the roof into the middle of them--about 30" out from the wall--there are big overhangs. The challenge is to get at the facia in a way that allows the gutter to be put up while having a place to lean the ladder. The only thing that works is to climb up onto the roof (it is a relatively shallow slope) from the side and lie head-down drilling and screwing in from above (praying I don't go over the 2-story drop!).

Inspection by Tourism is June 17.

It turns out we will have 2 suites/apartments for daily rent this year-- #1 "Evening Overlook" and #2 "Sunset Solitude. Schedule it is via Airbnb

We have added a play set (for kids up to age 10) and a picnic table both on the west side. Ian has a horseshoe pit in mind. And, of course, we have the stream just behind with the two bridges and the short walking/wheelchair trail.
We strongly recommend the beaches (50 or more in the east) including our nearest one about a mile walk away.

Access Advisor inspected and qualified three of our suites as "fully accessible," and they are so by careful design when we were remodelling the old grocery store into separate units. Our web page, www.brooksidepei.ca, describes the process as well as the features. The access advisor organization lists places that have qualified on their web site, but here is the kicker--they do not personally create information pages for qualifiers but rather post links to each one's own web page. Sadly the big hotels in Charlottetown REALLY DON'T CARE, since their links lead to their general home pages which will admit to nothing except, "Call the front desk." for accessibility information. ONE WONDERS HOW MANY ACCESSIBLE ROOMS THEY ACTUALLY HAVE! On the plus side, if you book places like ours with airbnb, you get a detailed list of the actual accessibility features they offer.

I checked how to find handicapped-accessible places on airbnb and find it is not as straightforward as I hoped. You cannot put "handicapped accessible" in the search line--instead put a place (like PEI) in the search and THEN go to the box labelled "change filters". Drop down to accessibility and check a few of the boxes like wide doorways, grab bars around shower, etc. and re-do the search. For PEI we are the ONLY place that shows up with our 3 ground-floor units.
By the way if you check both a tub with transfer bench AND roll-in shower you will get nothing, since no unit has both.

The remodeling work is 99% done now. All four suites are finished and approved by tourism and the office is almost done. I'm finishing a cleaner's cart. We still have lots of openings for this Summer and welcome your reservations--particularly through airbnb.
