We’ve just wrapped up our stay at Planet Hollywood Costa Rica and WOW, what a beautiful property!!

This resort is very modern, clean, and incredibly well maintained, all built right into the hillside overlooking the bay! The layout is spread across multiple levels, which means stunning views from so many spots around the property. It’s also super easy to get around with walking paths and regular shuttles running throughout!

There are so many dining options, which I love because it keeps things from ever feeling repetitive! Along with the buffet, you’ve got several à la carte restaurants including Tex Mex, Italian, steakhouse, and Asian… so you can mix it up all week long!

For something quick and casual, Guy’s Burger Joint is included and SUCH a great spot for an easy lunch by the pool! There’s also Star Class Coffee, which is included too, perfect for grabbing your morning coffee, ice cream, pastries, and quick snacks during the day!

The main pool area definitely has the energy! There’s always something going on… music, activities, and a really fun, social vibe! But if you’re looking to unwind, there are quieter areas around the resort where you can totally relax and recharge. Evenings bring shows, entertainment, and a laid back nightlife feel!

The beach here is really enjoyable and super swimmable! You can walk out a long way… we were out about 200 to 300 feet and still not even shoulder deep, which is amazing for kids or anyone who prefers calm, shallow water! One of the BEST parts though… the wildlife!! We saw monkeys in the trees around the resort regularly, which just makes the whole Costa Rica experience feel that much more special!

For families, there’s so much to do! The Stars Kids Club, family friendly pool areas, and tons of daytime activities keep kids busy and entertained!

You’ll also notice the Hollywood theming throughout, with fun movie memorabilia and little details woven in everywhere.

There’s also the option to upgrade to Star Class, which gives you access to a dedicated pool area, better room locations, and those extra service touches if you want to elevate your stay a bit!

Over the past week, we’ve been exploring inland Costa Rica, heading into the mountainous regions around Monteverde, San Mateo, and San José.

The drive up to Monteverde was an experience on its own. It’s a steady climb up the mountain with winding roads that narrow as you go and sections that turn to gravel. Along the way, you pass small farms tucked into the hillsides, coffee plants growing along the slopes, and pockets of farmland with cattle and sugarcane.

Monteverde is known for its cloud forest, but what really makes it unique is the environment itself. The elevation and consistent moisture create a layer of low hanging clouds right through the forest, which supports an incredible range of plant and wildlife species. There are well maintained paths to explore with hanging bridges, and viewpoints throughout, all surrounded by dense forest.

San Mateo is set in the mountains and has a completely different feel. The terrain opens up to wide views across the hills and valleys. It’s common to see coffee growing in the region, along with farmland and grazing areas, and ATVs and side by sides are a big part of how people get around, especially as you head further into the hills.

While in San José, we visited the Toucan Rescue Ranch, which was easily one of the highlights. It’s a rescue and rehabilitation centre for animals like toucans, sloths, and other native wildlife that have been injured or displaced. The focus is on getting them back into the wild whenever possible, and you can see how much care and effort goes into every part of it.

We’ve had such an amazing stay at Riu Palace Costa Rica! With early arriving direct flights from Calgary, Riu lets you get straight to the fun as soon as you arrive, which is a big plus on your travel day.

The resort is located on Playa Matapalo, about 30 minutes from Liberia airport, which makes arrival and departure very easy. The property is very lush, with wildlife like monkeys and iguanas, and a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere. The Palace side is the more upscale option of the two neighbouring Riu resorts, offering a calmer environment while still giving access to plenty of activities.

The resort itself is well laid out, easy to navigate, and beautifully maintained. There are multiple pools, including larger main pools and quieter areas if you want something more relaxed. The beach is directly accessible with loungers available, shaded by the surrounding mangrove trees. You can arrange jet ski rentals right from the beach if you’re looking for something a bit more adventurous. Food options are plentiful with a main buffet, several à la carte restaurants (first come first serve, no reservations), a coffee bar that is a standout, and 24 hour room service, which is always a nice added bonus.

There is a full range of amenities including a gym, spa, and daily entertainment. Throughout the day there are activities around the pool like music, games, and fitness classes, and in the evenings there are shows, live music, and themed entertainment.

One of the advantages of staying at Riu Palace Costa Rica is the access to Riu Guanacaste next door. This gives you access to additional pools, bars, daytime dining options, and a more lively atmosphere if you’re looking for it. It’s very easy to walk between the two resorts, so you really get the best of both experiences.

The water park, Splash Water World, is located between the two properties and is included for guests. It features multiple water slides, including larger slides, as well as smaller slides and a splash area for younger kids.

This is the breathtaking Ik Kil Cenote near Chichén Itzá in Mexico. Surrounded by lush jungle, hanging vines, and towering limestone walls, this natural sinkhole feels like stepping into another world. Once sacred to the ancient Maya, today it is one of the most famous cenotes in the Yucatán Peninsula.
Descend the carved stone staircase and you will find crystal clear, cool water nearly 40 metres below the rim. Brave travellers can dive or jump into the deep turquoise pool and swim beneath the cascading vines while tropical birds echo through the open cavern above. It is the perfect place to cool off after exploring the legendary ruins of Chichén Itzá nearby.
