It’s been a long winter and we are all excited to get back whale watching. Today I tried out lobster fishing with my dad and friends. It was a hard job supervising these guys. I throughly inspected their bait before they put it in the traps, the red fish were my favourite. Now I know why the eagles that Mandy has told me about like them so much. I didn’t get to band any lobsters because I don’t have thumbs to hold the banding tool, but that’s ok. My new friend Bruce made up for that by sharing his wieners and chips from his lunch. It made my day. Thanks Spencer for letting me try a new job. I don’t think I’ll give up whale watching anytime soon and switch careers but it was a fun experience.

I’ll see you all in a few months!

🐋 That’s a wrap on our 2025 season! 🐋

What a year it’s been on the Bay of Fundy — our busiest season ever with 172 trips and a 90% success rate for spotting humpbacks!

Some highlights that left us (and our guests) speechless:
• Lacey the humpback putting on the show of the summer with about 50 breaches in a single trip.
• Our first-ever quadruple breach — four whales in the air at once!
• A rare and beautiful encounter with an endangered leatherback sea turtle.
• Multiple sightings of Old Thom, the Bay’s legendary lone orca.
• And the unforgettable, humbling sight of a great white shark feasting on a humpback whale carcass.

Speaking about the great white shark encounter, our pictures were pretty popular leading to 10 different publications and interviews!
1. Saltwire newspaper, online edition. -Great white shark feasting on whale in Digby neck adds twist to whale watching season.
2. CBC Halifax tv - Why shark encounters are happening more in Nova Scotia.
3. CBC Radio Main Street interview with Jeff Douglas
4. Global TV suppertime edition interview(also imbedded into the webpage article.
5. Global webpage - Whale watching tour gets front row seat to shark aggressively eating carcass.
6. Weather Network zoom interview with Nathan Coleman- White shark spotted feasting on a whale in the bay of Fundy.
7. City tv phone interview - Curious great white makes waves for tour passengers.
8. City Radio interview for the Todd Veinotte show.
9. People magazine(!?!?)- whale watch tour treated to rare encounter with a great white shark aggressively devouring its meal.
10. CBC news New Brunswick (article about old Thom) - whale watchers excited about return of friendly orca to the bay of Fundy.

All of these are available online if you would like to see them for yourself! All you have to do is visit the homepage of the media source and search “shark” and you should see the article. Our pictures also lead to 1,000,000 hits on our page this month! Wow!

We also want to give a big shout-out to our friend Tessa, who joined us on 17 trips (that’s 10% of the season!) — we think she might love whales just as much as we do. 🐳💙This summer she was lucky enough to see the white shark and old Thom!

From all of us at Freeport Whale & Seabird Tours, thank you to everyone who joined us this season. Your excitement and curiosity make what we do so special. Until next year — may the whales keep breaching, the seabirds keep soaring, and the Bay of Fundy keep amazing us all.

🐾 Ahoy friends, it’s Hank here! 🐾

What a summer I had on the Bay of Fundy! I went on all 172 trips this season (that’s right — every single one). I worked hard, played harder, and even earned Employee of the Month three months in a row. 🏆🐶

Some of my favourite parts of the season:
🐕 Meeting so many new dog friends (and kid friends too!)
🐋 Watching whales (though I’ll admit, sometimes I napped while the humans got excited)
💙 Helping a few nervous passengers feel calm — that’s part of my job!
📸 Posing for so many photos. I think I might be the most photographed crew member on the boat.

All summer long people showed up asking, “Where’s Hank?” — and let me tell you, that made my tail wag every single time.

Thanks to my dad Bradley for making sure I was on the boat everyday, my assistant Mandy for running my taxi service (even though you left me for three whole days when you were camping) and Donna and Amara in the office for all the treats and snuggles this season.

The humans are sharing a few of their favourite pictures of me, but if you’ve got some too, please drop them in the comments. I’d love to see my best angles! 😉

Until next season, friends — thanks for all the pats, scratches, and treats. 🐾❤️

Love,
Hank 🐶⚓

Here is something to celebrate! Our little company has made waves all over! Freeport whale and seabird tours is in People magazine! Mandy is manifesting National Geographic next…

A whale watching tour in Nova Scotia, Canada saw a great white shark eating a whale carcass during a Sept. 2 tour. 'It's a rare sighting because sharks "don’t have to come to the surface to breathe,'a tour guide said.

Guess who is back? Thom is back! We found him cruising alone near the shipping lanes but he quickly met up with his usual dolphins buddies. Welcome back Thom!

On our way back in from our afternoon tour, we detoured again to see if we could see the shark again. I think this may have been a different individual though still a white shark. He was having a feast! We often get asked if we see sharks while on tour, and sadly we don’t often see them. This was an exception. And exceptional!

SHARK! Yesterday we were alerted that there was a dead humpback whale floating up the bay. We approached it to get some pictures to see if we could see lines on it or wounds to explain what may have happened to it. We didn’t see any marks or lines attached. I took a photo of the tail to send off to get an identity but am waiting to hear back. Meanwhile, today on our afternoon tour, we came across the whale again. This time there was a great white shark feasting! As sad as it is to loose one of our whale friends it’s also very cool to see the cycle of life and know that the whale will feed lots of other animals.

Wow! How cool was it to see a leatherback turtle today!
