Whoops! I missed posting last night! Was this whale celebrating the weekend?! Or maybe just happy to see our friend Tessa Savelkoel made it here again. She is now an honorary Porgie crew member according to Hank. He even gave her a crew T-shirt last night. Maybe because she has whale watched on more trips with us than any other guest (17 trips last year) but more likely because she brings him snacks. Thanks Tessa!! We sure like having you aboard! Oh! And thanks for letting us use your pics!

We have had 100 trips!!! And to celebrate we had lemon squares for a treat today. Thanks to our wonderful customers this morning who were happy to celebrate with us. And the rest of the day was just as good. Even getting mugged by a pod of 7 whales this evening. Drop your guesses below on how many trips you think we will end up with this summer!!

So we always say we never know what to expect when we leave the wharf for a trip and today was full of those trips. Trip one we weren’t finding any humpbacks but got a call from captain Trevor with BIWSC telling us he had a fin whale! Usually fin whales are so fast we can’t catch up with them. They can travel at a top speed of 45 miles per hour and the little pudgy porgie just can’t catch up. Well this one was just cruising along at our speed and though he made a few dives he was coming back up close by. A few times he surfaced right beside the boat! He was so close I was having trouble getting the whole whale in the frame of my camera with it zoomed out all the way. At a top length these beautiful beasts can be over 80’ long!

Second trip we decided to go down below brier island hoping to find some whales down there since there did t seem to be any up in our neck of the woods. We travelled over 10 miles down the bay but weren’t able to find any. It was sad that we couldn’t find any but the guests were happy to do a complete loop around brier island and also received free passes to co e again another time. Our free passes dont have an expiry date. We don’t care when you use them, we just want to you use them and give us another chance!

Our third trip we had reports that there were humpbacks far far up the bay. Up past Tiverton and up the Digby neck in whale cove.(fitting, I know) we knew it would be a long trip but we were determined to see whales! So up we went, and it was so worth it. We saw a mom and baby pair and several other humpbacks. We got great looks at them and even saw some breaching in the distance! Coming back in captain Bradley decided to come back down the island through the St. Mary’s bay side so we could escape some of the tide that was running hard in the Fundy. It was a real treat. We came through the passage, saw an eagle, and the balancing rock! Some of our passengers had made the truck back to balancing rock before on the trail, but none had ever had the chance to see it from the water before. It was a long trip but everyone was happy we had accomplished our mission of seeing some whales.

Special thanks to the ferry crew in Petit Passage who waited a few extra minutes for the returning passengers to catch the ferry so they didn’t have to wait a long hour for the next. Some of them had a Long drive ahead of them before they reached their next destination.

So in short, we don’t always know what the trip (or the day) will bring but we can always make the most of it. And at the very least we will have a fun boat ride and free passes to come again.

Guess what? We have upgraded the Porgie! Yes, that right! We installed a star link recently and are now offering free wifi to our guests so now you can keep in contact with your family, reserve accommodations or even FaceTime your best friend who couldn’t come on vacation with you! The bay of Fundy is horrible for cell service so this allows the boat to stay in contact with the office, make our social media posts right from the boat and even check the shark tracker to see if any friends are near by. Considering the porgie was built in a time when internet itself was a very new thing we think it’s pretty cool to have this aboard now.

P.s. this post was made from the boat on our way in from an awesome trip. Come back this evening to see what we saw!

It sure was thick fog for the first two tours of the day but the last tour the skies cleared and it was beautifully warm and sunny. Whale watching was a challenge today but we still had sightings on all our tours! Still sitting just a smidge below 90% success so we would call that a win!
