Dinner downtown, a walk by the river and a night at the theatre. 🎭

Make an October evening of it in Gananoque, where the Thousand Islands Playhouse sits right on the St. Lawrence River.

Start with dinner downtown, take in the waterfront before the show, then settle into the theatre for Come From Away.

The internationally celebrated musical tells the true story of the thousands of passengers welcomed into Gander, Newfoundland, following the events of September 11, and the remarkable kindness shown by the community that took them in.

October’s cooler temperatures make it a great time to explore the 1000 Islands by bike, whether you’re looking for an easy waterfront ride or want to spend more of the day on two wheels.

🚲 Ride the 1000 Islands Parkway Trail
Follow 37 kilometres of paved trail along the St. Lawrence River between Gananoque and Brockville. The route skirts shoreline coves and bays and passes through small communities including Ivy Lea and Rockport.

🍂 Explore beyond the Parkway
Head toward the Rideau for secondary-road cycling or take your ride onto the Cataraqui Trail for a different look at the region.

October is a great time to explore the 1000 Islands on foot, with routes ranging from waterfront walks to more rugged hikes through the changing landscape.

Follow trails through Thousand Islands National Park and climb to the Donevan Lookout for views over the St. Lawrence River and surrounding islands.

Explore more than 12 kilometres of trails through forests, wetlands and rocky ridges, with several loops and routes to choose from.

🍂 Gananoque Trail System
Stay closer to town with 12 kilometres of interconnected trails winding along the Gananoque River, through wooded areas and around the community.

A fall day in Gananoque is best planned around where you’re eating next. 🍂

One of Canada’s most beloved musicals arrives in Gananoque. 🎭

Beginning September 22, Come From Away takes the stage at the Thousand Islands Playhouse.

Based on the remarkable true story of what happened when 38 planes carrying thousands of passengers were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland following the September 11 attacks, the Tony Award-winning musical tells a story of generosity, friendship and the extraordinary things that can happen when a community opens its doors to strangers.

Looking for the first signs of fall in the 1000 Islands? 🍂

Late September is when summer greens begin giving way to those first flashes of yellow, orange and red. Here are a few places to catch the season starting to change:

🥾 Landon Bay
Head into the trails beneath the forest canopy, then make your way to the lookout for views across the islands and changing shoreline.

🌿 Charleston Lake Provincial Park
Explore the park’s forested trails and lakeside scenery as the first fall colour begins appearing around the water.

🌊 Joel Stone Park
Stay closer to town with a waterfront walk in Gananoque, where you can catch changing trees against the blue of the St. Lawrence.

🚗 1000 Islands Parkway
Take the scenic route and watch for pockets of colour appearing between the river, rocky shoreline and forest along the way.

It’s not peak colour yet, and that’s part of the beauty. This is the moment when two seasons meet in the 1000 Islands.

The road trip is part of the adventure in the 1000 Islands. 🚗

Follow the 1000 Islands Parkway for a day of trails, river views and stops along the St. Lawrence.

📍 Start: Gananoque
Begin at Joel Stone Park for a walk along the waterfront and views across the St. Lawrence. From there, head east out of town and onto the Parkway.

🥾 Stop 1: Landon Bay
Trade the car for the trails and hike up to the lookout for panoramic views over the river and islands. Take your time exploring before getting back on the Parkway.

🌲 Stop 2: Mallorytown Landing
Continue east to Thousand Islands National Park. Explore the visitor area, walk along the shoreline and get another perspective on the islands from the river’s edge.

🚗 The drive back
Turn west toward Gananoque and enjoy the Parkway from the opposite direction, with plenty of St. Lawrence views along the way.

One road. Three destinations. A full day in the 1000 Islands.
