Our cozy cottage in Southcott Pines sits right in the heart of something rare and incredible—an oak savanna! 🌳✨
This unique ecosystem is a mix of prairie grasslands and oak forests, with only 25–35% tree cover. That means sunlight filters through, allowing wildflowers and special plants to thrive. Cool, right?
Fun fact: 🌎 Less than 1% of the world’s oak savannas still exist, and right next door at Pinery Provincial Park, nearly half of the world’s remaining oak savanna is protected. That makes our area one of the most precious natural environments on the planet! 💚
You’ll find all kinds of neat plants here—like woodland sunflowers, rough blazing star, and New Jersey tea—that can’t grow in shady forests. 🌼🌾 And if you’re lucky, you might spot rare species like the Fern-leaved Yellow False Foxglove or the False-foxglove Sun Moth. These plants and creatures depend on oak trees to survive.
🔥 Fun twist: controlled fires (called prescribed burns) help this ecosystem stay healthy! Fire clears out thick brush, helps seeds grow, and keeps invasive plants away. Indigenous communities have used fire for thousands of years to care for this land.
