In Canada the “Italian Wine Society” is also known as “Amici dell’Enotria” or Friends of Enotria, being Enotria (land of wines) the name given to Italy by the Greeks. More than thirty years ago, under the auspices of the Italian Ambassador in Canada, The Nova Scotia Chapter of the Amici dell’Enotria Society was established in Halifax by Rodolfo Meloni the Italian Honorary Consul for Atllantic Can

Under the guidance of President Meloni and his executive, over the years The Italian Wine Society continued to foster and to promote in Canada the appreciation for Italian culture. Many are the events organized by this association i.e dinners tastings in established city restaurants or in private halls, prepared by the best regional chefs. Due to the continued and friendly relations that this Association established with Italian Wineries, many of our dinners from time to time were and are attended by Italy’s wineries principals. Among them Marquis Leonardo Frescobaldi, Alessandro Boscaini, Dario Boscaini, Marquis Piero Antinori, Sandro Bottega, Nicola Fabiano, Guido Serio etc. In cooperation with the Italian Trade Commission (ICE) the Italian Wine Society organized Italian wine fairs generally attended by 600 to 700 Italian wine and food lovers. Over the past few years proceeds generated by the past two wine and food shows totaling $23,000.00 were donated to the Izak Walton Children Hospital and Pier 21 National Immigration Museum. In addition to the above, from 1999 the Italian Wine Society organized for the members annual 14 days cultural and eno-gastronomic trips to two different regions of Italy. Since then all regions of Italy were visited, Tuscany and Veneto being the most popular were visited four times. For the events and the trips to Italy guided by Rodolfo Meloni, this Association is recognized as one of the most active society in Canda to foster Italy’s wine, food and culture, in other words La Bella Vita.

Chapter 4 Wine Tour
During the wine tour vacation, by renting a zodiac we were able to explore 10 Km of the Sardinia east coastline south of the world renown Emerald Coast (Costa Smeralda) a coast full of cliffs (training places for beginners mountain climbers) and caves plus pristine beaches with unbelievable turquoise color waters accessible only by boat. One of the beach was Cala Luna that became popular when the movie Swept way was filmed almost entirely on this beach. Back in 2003 the original 1974 film was redone by Madonna directed by Guy Ritchie
I took the liberty to add some pictures with the welcoming reception given to us by Masi owner Sandro Boscaini and his daughter Alessandra. By meeting them in Halifax almost 30 years ago during a wine tasting dinner. They are the people that by inviting me and other society members to visit them in Italy, I organised the first wine tour in Veneto and Tuscany. Due to the great success on the first trip we were able since then to continue with these trips to date except the two years during Covid.

During our week spent visiting the southern part of Sardinia, the participant experienced great food and wines second to none, in addition not only they visited sites like the city of Nora with the ancient mosaic floors founded by the Phoenician, almost 3000 years ago. This city later was conquered by the Carthaginian and than the Romans. Also they became experienced cheese makers when they milked the sheep and made the ricotta and fresh pecorino. Visited also antique zinc mines, listen the music created by the singing stone ( a massive garden full of singing stone sculptured by famous sculptor Sciola. Witnessed the roasting of almost 20 piglets during the Sardinia dinner night at our amazing seashore resort. Visited Santadi winery winner of the 3 Glasses as top Italian wine made by Carignano a vine that grows on sand. Visit Mesa winery owned by world publicist Gavino Sanna the made his fortune in NY, Visited the city of Cagliari including the famous fresh fish marked reputed to be the second best in Europe after the one in Barcellona followed by lunch and relaxation at the Poetto, Cagliari famous 10 Km beach.

Returned home after 44 days vacation in Italy on the wine tour, Great trip and companions, superb hotels in Riva del Garda, Trentino and in Nora, Sardinia, great food and almost 50 different wines tasted with local food at world renown wineries. Among them: Antinori in Francia Corta, Masi in Veneto, Ferrari and Moser (former world cycling champion) in Trentino. Santadi and Mesa in Sardinia. Here is a carousel of photos.
