Great destinations come with a built-in gathering place. At home, that would be a kitchen party, on the Halifax waterfront, we call it the Salt Yard.

Salt Yard is a colourful pocket of the Halifax Waterfront located between Salter and Sackville Streets, right along the boardwalk. Here, a collection of small local businesses brings together food, drinks, shopping, and plenty of places to stop and take in the harbour.

For delegates, it's a convenient place to explore without an itinerary. Grab something local to eat, browse the shops, find a spot by the water, or meet up with colleagues for a drink at a seasonal waterfront beer garden.

For planners looking for somewhere to point delegates during their free time, put Salt Yard on the list.

No two delegates experience a destination the same way.

One might have two hours to explore the waterfront. Another is looking for local food, a running route, Titanic history, or a neighbourhood they haven't discovered yet.

The Discover Halifax Itinerary Planner makes it easier for attendees to turn their free time into a Halifax experience that fits them, based on their interests, available time, and the parts of the region they want to explore.

For event planners, it means you don't have to anticipate every interest or fill every free hour. Simply point delegates to the Halifax Business Traveller page, where the Itinerary Planner is just one of the resources available to help them make the most of their time in Halifax.

Consider this one less thing to plan, and one more resource to share with your attendees.

Why do event planners love hosting in Halifax? Our post-event surveys tell the story.

Since beginning the survey in 2024, Halifax has earned an average destination satisfaction rating of 9.4/10 from planners who have hosted meetings or conventions here.

They’ve praised our beautiful city and surroundings, variety of venues and hotels, exceptional convention centre staff, and, of course, the East Coast hospitality and charm that makes every event feel a little more special.

As one planner put it: “The overall east coast hospitality and charm gives any event a head start for success.”

We’re incredibly proud of these results, and even prouder of the partners across Halifax who help create such memorable experiences for planners and attendees alike.

Thinking about Halifax for your next event? We’d love to welcome you.

If you're bringing a conference to Halifax, here's one thing worth knowing before your delegates arrive: lobster isn't just on the menu, it's part of Nova Scotia's identity. 🦞

For centuries, lobster has shaped our coastal communities, economy, and culinary traditions. Today, it's one of the experiences visitors look forward to most, whether they're cracking into a traditional lobster supper, sharing lobster rolls while overlooking the water, or discovering creative dishes prepared by local chefs. The Mi'kmaq have harvested lobster for generations, and Nova Scotia's cold, nutrient-rich Atlantic waters continue to produce some of the world's most sought-after lobster.

As a planner, knowing where to point your delegates for an authentic lobster experience is one small way to help them connect with the destination beyond the conference.

What will your meeting attendees remember when they get home?

According to the annual Amex GBT Global Meetings and Events Forecast, it is estimated that the host destination represents approximately one-quarter of the overall attendee experience. That means the environment surrounding the conference can influence how delegates connect, recharge and ultimately remember the event.

In Halifax, a compact downtown allows attendees to move easily between convention venues, hotels, restaurants and the waterfront. Local history, coastal experiences and community programming can also be easy incorporated directly into an agenda.

For planners, the takeaway is simple: selecting a destination is also an experience-design decision. A strong program may bring delegates into the room. The right destination gives them greater value for their time.

The definition of a successful conference is changing.

Across the business events industry, success is increasingly being measured not only by attendance, room nights, and economic impact, but also by the lasting value an event can create through community engagement, collaboration, knowledge sharing, and social impact.

Snack Packing for Good gives planners a simple way to put that idea into action.

Designed for groups of 10–500 participants, this hands-on activity brings delegates together to assemble healthy snack kits that are distributed through Second Harvest’s network of community partners to organizations supporting children, youth, and families facing food insecurity.
