PONANT’s Le Lyrial visited today, bringing some French small-ship luxury to the waterfront. Built in Italy and delivered in 2015, she measures 142 metres long, with 122 staterooms and suites and roughly 11,000 gross tonnage.

And that smaller size comes with perks: access to smaller ports and harbours that can’t accommodate the big cruise ships. More places to explore, fewer people arriving with you.

Next up Le Lyrial is in Yarmouth, Boston, Martha’s Vineyard and Newport, before finishing in New York. Honestly, that’s a pretty excellent autumn road trip… without the driving!

Pearl Mist was looking super cute today!

Pearl Mist sails for Pearl Seas Cruises, a small-ship luxury line focused on the Great Lakes, Canadian Maritimes, St. Lawrence Seaway and New England. Think scenic cruising, local history and exploring the places along the way.

A few little-ship facts:

⚓️ Her smaller size opens up destinations that larger cruise ships can’t access.

And a little local connection: she was built right here in Nova Scotia. 💙

I can identify cruise ships in Halifax harbour, but apparently I still need help figuring out when I’m eating dinner.

After three NCL cruises, Jade, Prima and Breakaway! We are trying Royal Caribbean for the first time on Quantum of the Seas!

Even before boarding, there’s a learning curve: a different app, different extras, dining options, and suite benefits that don’t translate neatly between cruise lines.

Still on my research list: which specialty restaurants are worth booking, and what the gluten-free experience is like with celiac disease.

If you’ve sailed BOTH NCL and Royal, what was the biggest adjustment or pleasant surprise?

For this What to Know Wednesday, I did a little cruise math: an eight-night Seabourn sailing from Halifax versus a Royal Caribbean balcony cruise for two people in Canadian dollars.

The cruise fares? About $14,500 versus $10,000.

But adding drinks, Wi-Fi, three nights of specialty dining to Royal, plus estimated flights for both trips, brings them to approximately $15,800 versus $13,500.

That roughly $4,500 fare gap becomes about $2,300 for two.

Different ships, different experiences and you might happily skip those extras on Royal. That’s part of the math, too!

The point? Before ruling a cruise in or out, check what the fare includes and what you’d actually add. The starting price only tells part of the story.

* my comparison uses different sailing dates and estimated airfare, as flights aren’t available for the actual dates yet. Shore excursions and personal spending are extra.

October’s only five days in and my camera roll is already feeling it!

We started with four ships on October 1, welcomed Explora III yesterday, and today Seabourn Venture embarks from Halifax… some lucky people’s harbour walk ends with unpacking onboard.

Still ahead? Queen Mary 2 on October 9, another four-ship day on October 11, and Viking Polaris arriving for an overnight on October 22.

58 scheduled cruise calls across the month. My fall plans appear to involve standing near water!

Blue skies, a sparkling harbour, and EXPLORA III making a very stylish appearance for Ship Sunday.

A few fun facts about her:
Built in Genoa, Italy, and welcoming guests since July 2026.
19.2 metres longer than EXPLORA I and II
461 suites with private terraces.
The fleet’s first LNG-capable ship.

A private terrace at sea sounds lovely, but today the view from the Halifax waterfront was doing pretty well for itself.

Imagine leaving freezing cold Canada for a warm Caribbean cruise…

…and then saying, “You know what this vacation needs? A room that’s -8°C.”

Norwegian Breakaway has an actual ice bar onboard, complete with parkas, gloves, ice sculptures and cocktails served in glasses made of ice.

We tried it on Breakaway and, admittedly, it was pretty cool.

Four cruise ships kicked off the month in Halifax today!

And I LOVE the mix here. Azamara bringing the smaller-ship vibe, Sapphire Princess back in town, Norwegian Jewel representing NCL, and Seven Seas Splendor casually showing up with the ultra-luxury crowd.

Not a bad way to start October!

Did you know you can actually start a cruise in Halifax?

And I’m not talking about the Dartmouth ferry.

In May 2027, SH Vega is embarking from Halifax on an 11-night expedition to Reykjavík, travelling through Newfoundland and Greenland along the way.

SH Vega was actually in Halifax today… but if you missed her, you can just book a cruise next year and get a much closer look.

She’s a pretty cool little ship too:
