Pena Palace was the place I wanted to see most on our Portugal trip, and it did not disappoint!

Perched high above Sintra, it’s a spectacle before you even arrive. Seeing those colourful towers come into view as we made our way up the hill was a moment I’ll never forget. Then, standing there and taking in the palace and the views—wow. It’s one of the most spectacular places I’ve ever been.

Construction began in 1839 under King Ferdinand II, and nearly two centuries later, it still feels like something out of a fairytale. This was one of the highlights of my trip!

The best part of group travel? You never know who you’ll end up laughing with by the end of the day!

One day we’re all out exploring together, and the next you might be off finding your own favourite beach, café, or hidden gem. There are shared adventures and plenty of new friendships, but the vacation is still yours to enjoy your way.

Today’s stop was the enchanting medieval town of Óbidos. Surrounded by ancient castle walls, this beautiful town dates back centuries and was traditionally given as a wedding gift from Portuguese kings to their queens.

Walking along the narrow cobblestone streets, lined with whitewashed houses, colourful flowers and charming little shops, felt like stepping into a storybook. Óbidos is truly magical and easily one of the most picturesque places we have visited in Portugal!

Our final stop was the incredible Grutas de Santo António—and we absolutely loved it! Discovered in 1955, these caves began forming more than 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period. Over time, water slowly filtered through the limestone, creating the spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, columns and underground pools we see today—some formations taking thousands of years to grow just a few centimetres.

Walking through this magnificent underground world felt like stepping into another time. The size, colours and natural beauty were breathtaking, and it is truly something everyone should experience at least once!

Our next stop was the truly magical and peaceful town of Fátima. We visited the beautiful sanctuary, where people come from around the world to pray, reflect and light candles in memory of loved ones or for their special intentions. We also saw a piece of the Berlin Wall, displayed here as a powerful symbol of peace, freedom and hope. Whether you are religious or not, Fátima is a very moving place to experience.

Our first stop today is the magnificent Batalha Monastery, a breathtaking Gothic masterpiece that was begun more than 600 years ago to commemorate Portugal’s victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385.

Inside lies Portugal’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, holding two unidentified soldiers from the First World War—one brought home from Flanders and the other from Africa. The tomb is watched over by a military guard, creating a very powerful and moving tribute to all those who sacrificed their lives for their country. What an incredible place to experience in person!

Our final stop before reaching Nazaré was the colourful town of Águeda. Its famous Umbrella Sky Project was created to provide shade during the summer while bringing colour, art and life to the streets. Walking beneath hundreds of bright umbrellas was absolutely picturesque and such a fun way to end our day of exploring!
