Nature is not extracurricular — it’s essential.
I’m shocked to hear about the proposed cuts to outdoor education programs within the Toronto District School Board. These experiences are so much more than “field trips”, they give students the chance to build confidence, connection, resilience, curiosity, and a meaningful relationship with the natural world.
At a time when kids are growing up increasingly indoors and online, access to forests, rivers, campfires, trails, and hands-on learning matters more than ever. Outdoor education creates lifelong memories and teaches lessons that simply can’t be replicated inside a classroom.
These programs have shaped generations of students, helping them develop teamwork, independence, environmental stewardship, and a sense of belonging in nature. Losing them would be a tremendous loss for our children and our communities.
