Last week we ran our Expedition Food Training course with 7 individuals hungry for knowledge, and baked goods made over a fire. The weather certainly added some challenge but did not dampen our spirits as we made chocolate chip cookies in a reflector oven, baked Shepherd’s Pie and bread in a Dutch oven, grilled calzones on the fire, and baked a delightful pineapple upside down cake.

Along with a “Baking in the Backcountry” workshop, we talked about different ways of dehydrating and rehydrating meals, different menus for different types and lengths of trip, nutrition in the backcountry, food portioning and packing, waste management while out in the field, and so much more!

With over 30 years of experience managing food on trips, we love sharing what we’ve learned over the years with others. Everyone deserves to eat well in the backcountry and it’s not as hard or scary as it seems. Join us next time to expand your backcountry food knowledge. 🍞🍪🤤

One of the most valuable—and challenging—skills to teach in the backcountry is the ability to adapt and pivot when conditions change. Our River Roots crew recently had the opportunity to put this skill into practice.
With water levels too high on the Harricana River, our instructors acted quickly and decisively, recognizing the safety concern and transitioning to Plan B. Knowing when conditions have become unsafe is a critical judgment call. Sticking too rigidly to Plan A—hoping water levels will drop or that the next rapid won’t be as technical—can lead to unnecessary risks.
Thanks to strong leadership and support from our office team, the group made a smooth and safe shift to a new expedition route.

Any guesses on where they rerouted to?

So much of our daily lives revolve around food. Thinking about what to make for breakfast, looking for all the ingredients in your fridge and pantry, assembling it into a tasty meal, then doing it again for lunch AND supper. If you have young children you know how exhausting and time consuming this can be. Now imagine you are doing it for a group of strangers who have all sorts of different dietary needs that you are accustomed to. Oh and on top of all that, you don’t have access to a kitchen, you must cook everything over a fire.
At MHO Adventures, we excel at providing nutritious and tasty meals while on trip, thanks to an accumulated 30 years of knowledge and experience with backcountry meal planning and cooking. We want everyone to eat well on trip, which is why this Thursday and Friday, May 22-23, we are hosting an Expedition Food Training Program to share with participants why MHO Adventures is so well known for good food.
This course is perfect for camp directors, trip directors, food service providers, independent guides, wilderness travellers seeking to refresh their menus, small business owners aiming to offer high-quality, well-balanced meals to groups, and any outdoor industry professionals looking to expand their expertise.

Earlier this month, we wrapped up an incredible ORCKA Canoe Tripping course on the French River. Despite the high water levels presenting some unexpected challenges, this dedicated group rose to the occasion, showing resilience, teamwork, and a true passion for the outdoors.
One of the things we love most about these courses is the exchange of knowledge—not just from instructors to students, but among peers from all walks of life, united by a shared love for canoeing and wilderness travel.
Due to high demand, we’ve added another Canoe Tripping course from August 12–17. If you’re interested in becoming a canoe trip leader, visit our website to learn more about prerequisites and to find the right level for you.

On Tuesday, we bid farewell to our River Roots crew as they embarked on a 21-day expedition down the Harricana River—a journey of a lifetime!
Over the past three weeks, this group has been hard at work developing their whitewater paddling and rescue skills, while also diving into essential backcountry leadership training. From baking over a fire to workshops on community building, decision-making, Leave No Trace principles, goal setting, and effective feedback, they've built a strong foundation for guiding in remote wilderness settings.

6 hardworking individuals embark on the journey of a lifetime.

The 5th cohort of River Roots participants have just arrived back from their first trip together, a 4-day canoe trip on Georgian Bay. And the Bay did not go easy on them. An early season canoe trip presents many challenges such as cold weather and windy conditions 🌊

The next 36 days will be filled with whitewater paddling, swimming in rapids, whitewater rescue, navigating rapids in a canoe; workshops about leadership, backcountry baking, risk management, Leave No Trace; AND a 21-day expedition to James Bay 🛶

We are proud to offer this life changing experience and can’t wait to share the ride with yet another group of wonderful individuals. The journey ahead promises growth, adventure, and lasting connections.

Happy Earth Day!
Today is the day that we celebrate our one and only Earth 🌎 But let’s be real, we should be thinking about our Earth EVERY day. Climate change can be overwhelming to dwell on, but today is not about despair, it’s about all the positive actions that are taking place throughout the entire planet to help make our blue marble a wonderful place to live.

Many schools participate in cleaning up local green areas, people are signing petitions to drive real action, and some folks are planting trees.🌳 (A study found that urban reforestation projects improved the mental health of office workers who could view green spaces from their office.) Little actions can have a big impact on our communities. ♻️

If you want to help in any way you can, big or small, check out the official Earth Day website. Here you can find local Earth Day events, sign petitions that directly impact your life, and educate yourself on various green initiatives and climate change facts. 💚

Can you spot the route from Lake Superior to James Bay along the Missinaibi River?

This early French map of Canada features different trade routes around the Great Lakes. As one of the few mighty unimpeded waterways of the North, today the Missinaibi looks very similar to what the Ojibway and Cree, and later on the Voyageurs paddled hundreds of years ago.

This Canadian Heritage River is bursting with rich natural and cultural history, some of which you can read about in books and in museums, but sometimes you just need to experience the river itself to truly begin to understand how impactful and precious a waterway can be. Sure you can read all about historical figures paddling up and down the Missinaibi, but until you’ve paddled down the river and portaged around Thunderhouse Falls, it’s impossible to properly comprehend what a colossal task that was (and is).

Explore the Missinaibi with us this summer! We paddle the entire river in 26 days. If you don’t have that kind of time, you can divide the river up into sections to be paddled separately, or link different sections to tackle 2 in 1. The Upper Missinaibi section is the perfect warm up to the Thunderhouse Falls section as it starts with a smooth progression in difficulty, allowing you to dust off the cobwebs on your whitewater paddling skills. Or maybe you’d rather skip the portages and paddle the Lower Missinaibi to enjoy fun swifts and gravel bar camping.

Visit our website to see the different trips that we offer on the Missinaibi River.
