FIRE RESTRICTION IN EFFECT

Effective at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 26, 2023

A fire restriction is now in effect for the Big Lakes County permit area.

Under this restriction:
• Existing fire permits are suspended, and no new fire permits will be issued
• Safe wood campfires within fire rings in campgrounds are allowed
• Essential burning may be allowed with written permission from a forest officer

Prohibited:
• All outdoor wood fires are banned on public lands, including backcountry and random camping areas.
• The use of fireworks and exploding targets are also prohibited.

Allowed:
• Safe wood campfires (including charcoal briquettes) on private lands and in provincial campgrounds.
• Backyard fire pits, charcoal briquette barbeques.
• Propane/ natural gas powered appliances.
• Indoor wood fires contained within a device with a chimney and spark arrestor.
• Cooking, warming and lighting devices – all devices must be CSA approved and used as per manufacturer’s standards.
REMEMBER, never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished. If you see a wildfire, report it immediately by calling 310-FIRE or 911.

The fire restriction will remain in effect until conditions improve.

OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLE (OHV) BAN REMOVED - Residents can safely use their OHV at this time. Please use caution when recreating. Always have a water vessel, wajax bag, or firefighting equipment on hand. (Extinguisher or shovel). Please avoid idling on dry grass.

Order by the Director of Emergency Management of Big Lakes County Fire Control Order No. 2023-01 suspend or cancel any fire permits in the County or prohibit the lighting or require the extinguishment of any open fire set within the County's fire permit area.

Pursuant to Bylaw No. 02-2021 Fire Bylaw Under Section 11 "Fire Control Orders," the Director of Emergency Management orders that effective 15:00 May 5, 2023:

FIRE BAN AND OHV RESTRICTION IN EFFECT

A fire ban and OHV restriction is in effect within the Forest Protection Area due to extreme fire danger.

Under this fire ban:
• All existing Fire Permits are suspended (or cancelled)
• No new Fire Permits will be issued

Prohibited:
• All outdoor wood fires are banned, including wood campfires on public lands, wood campfires on private land and provincial campgrounds
• Backyard firepits
• BBQ charcoal briquettes
• The use of fireworks and exploding targets
• The recreational use of off-highway vehicles (OHV) on public lands, including designated OHV trails

Allowed:
• Propane/natural gas-powered appliances
• Open flame oil devices (e.g., turkey deep fryers, tiki torches)
• Indoor wood fires contained within a device with a chimney and spark arrestor
• All appliances must be CSA approved and used per manufacturer’s standards
• Indigenous people when using an OHV for traditional purposes. Traditional purposes are hunting, fishing, and trapping – including the use of an OHV to travel to the location(s) for these purposes.
• Essential industry-related activities requiring the use of OHVs.
• Off-highway vehicle use is still permitted on private lands.

We have some seasonal lots for rent this year!

6 private seasonal RV lots for rent within the hamlet of Joussard along Lesser Slave Lake. Lots are approx. 30ft X 70ft. (+/-). Fee for 2022 is $2050.00 and includes municipal water, sewer and power. Lots 1 & 2 and lots 4 & 5 ( see pics) are adjacent to each other respectively. Lots are not....

Alberta Health Services has informed the Town of Slave Lake that Blue-Green Algae has been confirmed on the High Prairie end of Lesser Slave Lake. Due to this, a Blue-Green Algae Health Advisory for Lesser Slave Lake has been declared by Alberta Health Services.

Our drinking water quality is monitored on a regular basis and is not affected by the current advisory.

If you see Blue-Green Algae avoid contacting it to protect yourself and pets. If contact is made, wash with clean water. If you feel unwell after having contact with lake water call Health Link at 811.

A fire advisory is in effect for Big Lakes County in conjunction with the Slave Lake Forest Area, due to forecasted high temperatures and low relative humidity.

Under this advisory:
· Current permits are suspended;
· No new fire permits will be issued until conditions improve;
· Some essential burning may be allowed, at the discretion of a forest officer;
· Permits for fireworks will require approval from a wildfire prevention officer before being issued by a forest officer.

Prohibited:
· Any burning without a valid fire permit, other than a campfire, is prohibited.

Allowed:
· Safe wood campfires *
· Backyard fire pits
· Portable propane fire pits
· Gas or propane stoves and barbecues
· Catalytic or infrared-style heaters

*Safe wood campfires - should be within a metal, brick, or rock fire ring.

They are required to:
· Be on rock, gravel, sand, or another non-combustible surface that extends at least one metre around the fire;
· Have a responsible person in attendance to keep fire under control at all times and extinguish before leaving;
· Have on hand enough water on site to extinguish the fire. Safe wood campfires on private lands include private land campgrounds and private land recreation areas; and
· Municipalities, Parks and protected areas may have additional fire safety requirements.

Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished.

If you see a wildfire, report it immediately by calling 310-FIRE. Visit www.albertafirebans.ca for a map of the affected area.

The fire advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve. The wildfire danger is VERY HIGH in the Slave Lake Forest Area.

Just in time for summer! Visiting friends or family in Joussard this summer, planning a fishing trip to Lesser Slave Lake or just want a quiet get-away for the family? Our vacation rental lots are available. Set up your RV once and you are done! Jump in the car and head for the lake whenever you want and know that your RV is there waiting for you and your family! Save money on gas, no hassles of trying to find a spot ever weekend and no “backing up” discussions ;) :) ! The community of Joussard is a fishing community and offers two local variety stores, new and extensive paved walking trails; fishing off of the local marina wharf about a 15 minute walk from the site. Local public access sites are available to access the lake. Community Canada Day celebrations include the best fireworks display in the area. Of course there are some details: -Our seasonal RV lot rentals offer municipally treated potable water, sewer and power hookups all included in the annual rate. -Pets are welcome -however they must be leashed and not left unattended. -Please inquire regarding general rules and rates.
