Why Canada’s Forests Are Engineered to Burn Hotter Than Our Neighbors Due South 🌲🔥
Ever wonder why Canadian wildfires seem so aggressive compared to what happens south of the border? It isn't just climate or bad luck—it comes down to a major policy difference in how public forests are managed.
In Canada, roughly 94% of forests are public Crown land. Under provincial regulations, timber companies clear-cut native, mixed forests and are legally required to restock them with high-yield, commercial evergreens (like pine and spruce). "Legally Required to plant mono species!"
To ensure these cash-crop conifers grow fast without competition, provinces have historically allowed widespread aerial spraying of herbicides (like glyphosate) to kill off broadleaf trees—aspens, birches, and alders. Did you ever wonder what's in the smoke you're breathing?
Here’s why that’s a disaster for wildfire safety:
Destroying Natural Firebreaks:
Deciduous trees like aspen hold tons of water in their leaves and act as natural, green fire barriers. Killing them leaves a continuous wall of highly resinous evergreen fuel. I have traveled with my ATV through burn areas where the deciduous trees are and it is not a wasteland burned to the ground.
Creating Tinderbox Plantations:
Replanting single-species coniferous crops creates uniform, same-age canopies. When a fire starts, it instantly climbs into the treetops and sweeps across thousands of hectares as a fast-moving crown fire. Monospecies fires also burn hotter and thereby kill micro-organisms in the soil.
But it's Natural:
When a natural, mixed forest burns, the fire usually moves unevenly, leaving patches of living soil and soil organisms intact. But when a dense, single-species conifer plantation catches fire, the uniform resin-heavy fuel bed creates an intense furnace effect.
The fire burns so hot and lingers so long that it bakes the ground down into deep layers: This leaves behind baked, water-repellent ground that struggles to recover for decades. Results: soil erosion, floods, sterile soil.
While the U.S. Federal Government largely abandoned clear-cutting and broadleaf-eradicating monocultures on public lands decades ago, Canadian policy has systematically engineered vast stretches of the northern landscape into dense, fast-burning timber farms.
Until provincial silviculture rules prioritize natural forest diversity and stop treating public land purely as a softwood crop, Canada will keep building the exact tinderboxes that feed these mega-fires in perpetuity.
