Pont du Gard - The Pont du Gard is an ancient aqueduct in the South of France constructed by the Roman Empire.

It crosses the Gardon River near the town of Vers-Pont-du-Gard in southern France.

The Pont du Gard, built as three tiers of archways to bring water to the city of Nîmes.

Three tiers of arches rise to a height of 48.8 meters (160 ft). The first tier is composed of 6 arches, from 15 to 24 meters (51 to 80 feet) wide, the largest spanning the river; the second tier is composed of 11 arches of the same dimensions; the third, carrying the conduit, is composed of 35 smaller (4.5 meters or 15-foot) arches.

Its width varies from 9 meters (30 ft) at the bottom to 3 meters (9.8 ft) at the top.

Uniworld is going paperless on board its river cruise ships, removing menus, printed cruise programmes and newspapers.

It has already removed paper - where possible - on its sister brand, U by Uniworld, which focuses on more active itineraries and informal nightlife for younger travellers.

Restaurant and bar menus are displayed on screens and cruise activities and information are shared on WhatsApp.

Uniworld managing director Ben Wirz said the cruise line has had positive feedback from guests about the changes.

"Guests with a conscience love it and those that perhaps care less are still finding it more practical," he said. "And it allows more flexibility with last minute changes too."

He said some authorities and suppliers still demand hard copies due to regulatory compliance, but otherwise paper would be removed.

The cruise line has also removed straws from its bars and gives passengers a reusable water bottle once they step on board, instead of plastic water bottles.

Longer term plans include replacing plastic key cards with rubber wristbands and replacing plastic soap dispensers with glass ones.

Blackbeard
On this day in the year 1718, the notorious pirate Blackbeard was killed in battle off the coast of Ocracoke, North Carolina by a crew of British sailors under the authority of the governor of Virginia. Blackbeard, whose real name was Edward Teach, had a fearsome reputation. He played upon his own legend, sometimes lighting coils of h**p rope afire under his hat to surround himself with smoke during battle. Yet, there is no record of him ever harming any of his captives or any member of his crew.
