A stroll around the rally site. Some pictures are from walking while others from the Site Taxi (golf cart). As volunteers we got a great gig driving folks around. We worked together driving one cart: Bob drove while Mary was the guide and social director. Lots of fun.

These are some random shots around the rally. Next will be some shots from the beer tent/music arena where, again, we joined in the crazy conga line with a few dozen of the Black Sheep contingent.

At The Rally: Noon, 100F and setting up a tent....in our minuscule section of shade. Perfect though...right at a cross roads with all bikes and folks wandering by and beside some very interesting folks. We never go to a 'quiet camping' area. However, the tent had some dry rot so this will be its final rally. Duct tape for now.

A few pictures from the road. The land and vegetation gradually changed as we dove deeper into the increasing heat. Hotel and motels, while always retaining the ability to underwhelm with their decor, thankfully had air conditioning. Bob usually obtained beer within walking distance.

Next: the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America national rally in Salt Lake City. We arrived about noon on Tuesday July 11. We wanted to arrive early to volunteer ...... and find a choice (i.e. shaded) place for our tent.

HEADING HOME:

Mary's regular co-pilot duties included, but not at all limited to, such things as multiple camera work (8,000 pictures!), GPS use (she has her own velcro'd on back of Bob's jacket) for various activities i.e. relaying info to Bob in extreme traffic, checking for alternate routes), 'off-bike' gear organizing, being an invaluable 'extra set of eyes' in various 'demanding' conditions, co-planning route options and, most often, applying a good dose of common sense as required.

However, one particular activity that Mary applied herself to has proven to be critical in retracing our steps throughout the whole ride: a Travel Diary. Dedication to this task was consistent and thorough. Below is a picture of that diary.

On Saturday, July 8th, it was time to leave family and head back on the road. Jesse, Dani, Ella and Sophie stood waving as we rode south for the Canada/USA border (located at the Peace Arch - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_Arch - between
Surrey, B.C. and Blaine, Wash., where B.C. 99 meets U.S. 5) and the road east home through the U.S. mid-west.

Although we had many stories to tell about the chills at the beginning of our journey a month prior, we were now venturing onto the flip-side of that coin: heat. Our plan was to be at a BMW motorcycle rally in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 11th. The temperature was already hovering around 98 F (37 C) there. We will camp there for five nights. But first we ride 2,000 km (1,600 mi). Heat and long days with frequent stops. Hotels/motels - with air conditioners - will be cherished each of those three travel days.

Pictured below is the three day route plan plus the daily route between overnight stays. The final map is at the rally site. We arrived there at noon and set up our tent. It was very hot but we did have a bit of shade. A bit.

Following this post we will load a few pictures of the road trip to the rally and then move on to the rally itself.

(July 7) Today is Friday, the day before we ride off east into the sunrise. An earlier post described our visit to the Port Alberni museum for some of our Trans Canada Highway research on this day but the following is how the rest of the day progressed with our 'West Coast Family'.

A logging demonstration was being held at the McLean Mill, a national historic site ( http://mcleanmill.ca/ ), and we are meeting up with Jesse and Danielle's family. Earlier we mentioned a birthday party for Danielle's step-dad, Jesse. At that party was Danielle's grandfather, Jack. Jack, now 83, (pictured with Mary in pics below) started working at the logging mill with his father when he was 11. We enjoyed his story telling and having him introduce us to the 'old way' of logging life. Fascinating.

McLean Mill is a place of many attractions and opportunities and is also the site where Jesse and Danielle got married. It was a real pleasure for us to return again to the Mill but now seeing how it all worked 'back in the day'.

It was a wonderful way to bring our visit to Port Alberni visit to a reluctant close. Enjoying a sunny afternoon with our West Coast Family.

Tomorrow we climb aboard our bike and begin our journey east via a BMW motorcycle rally in Salt Lake City, Utah and onward to friends and family 'Down East'.

(July 6) After a great afternoon wandering around Tofino it was time to return to Port Alberni. Family went to the beach while we decided to head back. Got as far as the local Information Centre and told that tractor-trailer was jack-knifed about 20kms along the beautiful winding way back. No alternate route. We decide to ride along in the hopes that the road cleared. Wrong. Slowed down in a hurry to join dozens of others waiting. Three hours later we were able to move along. So, for three hours we conversed with others, speculated on doing an 'end run' to squeeze through a possible opening (nada) and generally paced around. Bob found a tiny-pillow castaway on the roadside and took a selfie with it.

Other than that, a great ride back for a big pizza feed with all. Tomorrow a trip to the logging camp and museum.

One day we all, plus Ella and Sophie's friend Alex, ventured onward about 125 km to Tofino (http://www.tofino.ca/home) As mentioned in an earlier post, this is really where the pavement ends going west. Some say it is the real end of the Trans-Canada Highway. We took the bike (without the trailer and all that weight) while the others were in the car. Now that we had a 'naked bike', Bob had to get back to remembering how to ride a sport-tour bike rather than a 'sled'. He pulled some real quirky maneuvers on the twisty and beautiful road to Tofino.

We all stopped for a bite at a great little restaurant along the way and did a bit of shopping in Tofino. Danielle showed Mary some fine little shops while Bob and Jesse did a walkabout down along the water. Jesse's boat, Discovery Dawn was docked there for a short time (pic below, taken at a distance). Bob and Mary found (by accident) the Western Terminus sign and pictures taken (see earlier post for more pics of that).

Next: Long ride back in stalled traffic and the next day a great trip to an historic logging mill before we must travel on.

Days included a family birthday party for Danielle's step-dad, Jesse (sorry, we did not get any pics. That's unusual!), some kids art, some music playing, a BBQ blaze that caused a bit of excitement, campfire chats, ci**rs, ci******es and various beverages in the evening. A few pics (of what we did manage to produce):
