Yesterday, I fulfilled my final obligation for Blackfriars: a catered wedding at the Elsie Perrin Williams Estate. The room was stunning, the florals exceptional, and the weather entirely cooperative. The bride and groom were, in a word, perfect—it was an absolute delight to execute this wedding for them. The menu was a true farm-to-table affair; the bride’s father supplied the protein for both the appetizer and the main course directly from his farm. We paired these with strictly seasonal vegetables. The Stracotto di Manzo was prepared using a recipe I learned from Chef Francesco Lagi, a renowned executive chef from Florence celebrated for his high-end Tuscan and Mediterranean cuisine. This seamless ex*****on was made possible by my exceptional team. I was capably assisted by Sous Chef Liliana Hernandez Olivia, alongside our catering manager, Yamuna Guni. This event marked Yamuna’s final day with us, concluding her tenure as both our catering coordinator and the Forest City Culinary Experience facilitator. After four and a half years of incredible partnership, she is returning to Nepal for her own wedding this fall. It has been an absolute pleasure working with her, and we wish her a lifetime of happiness. With the final plates cleared and a wonderful chapter closed, I now look forward to a summer devoted entirely to writing and relaxation. - Bryan Lavery

For many months, my Substack sat dormant, less a failure of imagination than a collective refusal of the work to be rushed. Some of these essays have been years in the making, undergoing the quiet, iterative evolutions that occur when a piece is left to breathe. Recently, however, a shift occurred. As I closed a significant chapter, that hiatus has dissolved into a sudden, intense period of output. Though I have been fairly prolific these last months, this is not a sudden burst of novelty; it is a creative harvest, the distillation of long-gestating drafts into their final forms. It is also an expansion. Alongside these essays, I am currently at work on a culinary memoir and a collection of short stories. There is a particular, sharp clarity that accompanies an ending, and this current chapter feels like a homecoming, a moment where patient preparation finally aligns with a renewed sense of purpose. Thank you for reading Heart of an Artichoke, and for your continued support. If this piece resonated with you, please consider leaving a comment and clicking the heart; both are deeply appreciated.
