Eagle's Nest: A Place to Soar Inc.

Eagle's Nest: A Place to Soar Inc. Culturally responsive Treatment Foster Care for both indigenous and non-indigenous children and youth. Eagle's Nest: A Place to Soar Inc.

is a foster care organization in Ontario that seeks to provide a culturally appropriate foster care experience for Original Children. We use the term Original because for some people terms like Aboriginal are too similar to terms like Abnormal. Children need foster care for different reasons. Some families may be going through some extreme and difficult times and needs extra support. Our foster ho

mes provide a caring and nurturing environment to support the children through these difficult circumstances. We are always looking for caring people who may be interested in becoming foster parents. It is important to us that out foster parents can share the children’s culture. If you are not familiar with the Original culture and are open to learning, we are more than happy to consider your application and together we can learn and grow.

In our program, this has been a topic of conversation with our Indigenous Knowledge Keeper. Some of the youth/ children in our program have had their names given to them and others have not. We are hoping to work with neighboring communities to help our children/ youth who would like to get their name.

Please keep in mind, within First Nations communities are the only ones able to give names. There is a process to this, such as ceremony, time of year and offerings depending on the nation.

Yaw^ko/ Chii Miigwech ☺️

We get this type of question often. FB posts, telephone call, email, etc. Thought we would share a general answer, worded in the way we get asked.
More commonly, in our community, we do not use the term "spirit name". It is simply our Oneida name or Ukwehuwe name. If you are fortunate enough to access a speaker, please try start there, often a name given in another first language or English will not translate easily into Oneida language. There are many protocols around Oneida names, we just wanted to start with this brief explanation.
