A new report from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce found that 72% of businesses are experiencing labor shortages, up from 61% in the previous quarter. The report also found that the average vacancy rate is now 4.5%, the highest it has been in over 20 years.
The labor shortage is having a significant impact on businesses, forcing them to raise wages, reduce hours, and delay projects. In some cases, businesses are even being forced to close.
The report identified a few factors contributing to the labor shortages, including:
• An aging population
• Declining birth rates
• Reduced immigration
• The shift to remote work
• The rising cost of living
The Canadian government has taken some steps to address the labor shortages, such as increasing immigration targets and providing wage subsidies.
However, these measures have not been enough to solve the problem.
The labor shortage is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Businesses will need to find innovative ways to attract and retain workers, such as offering better wages, benefits, better working conditions, even international recruitment. ; unfortunately this last option appears to be daunting and stressful.
