Hidden Gem Alert: Discover Public Art in Downtown Mackenzie
Have you ever stopped to admire the incredible artwork at the Canada Post building in downtown Mackenzie?
In 1977, BC artist Georganna Malloff was commissioned by Public Works Canada to create a public art installation for the Mackenzie Civic Centre. Using sharp-edged carving tools and natural wood, Malloff brought to life the power and energy of the four elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.
Originally intended for indoor display, the panels gradually faded from public view over the years. Then, on July 31, 1998, members and volunteers of the Mackenzie Community Arts Council undertook an ambitious restoration project, contributing more than 145 volunteer hours to return these remarkable works to their original beauty.
🔸 Earth: Crafted from laminated red cedar, this panel features moose, rabbits, and other wildlife whose forms transform into the rugged mountain silhouettes that surround Mackenzie.
🔸 Air: Carved in redwood, snow geese soar and play among swirling cloud formations, capturing the freedom and movement of the wind.
🔸 Fire: This abstract spruce carving depicts mineral forms transformed by the energy and power of flame.
🔸 Water: Carved from yellow cedar, this aerial scene shows a young child snorkeling alongside seals, frogs, and beavers, celebrating life both above and below the water's surface.
Next time you're strolling through downtown Mackenzie, take a moment to visit this often-overlooked treasure. These beautiful carvings are more than art; they're a piece of our community's history and a testament to the volunteers who helped preserve it for future generations.
