Three Northern Flickers clinging to a tree during the cold snap on Tuesday. We have a large breeding population here every summer. They nest in the pasture trees and feed on the ants in our lawn. As you head down the driveway you can recognize them by their white rump as they flutter away. Their distinctive calls can be heard from dawn to dusk.

We’re back at it and ready to welcome guests this May!
The clean-up from the ice storm has been no small task—branches down, trails blocked, and a whole lotta firewood in the making. But with some grit (and a good chainsaw), we’ve made huge progress over the past couple of weeks.

Things might still be a little wild in spots, but the birds are singing, the sun is shining, and The Farmer’s House is ready for springtime soul-soothing. Come see what resilience looks like—in nature and in us.

🐔 Meet Our Newest Feathered Friends! 🐔

We’re thrilled to introduce the latest additions to our flock:
🐓Jann Eggden: This elegant hen lays stunning dark brown eggs, adding a rich hue to our egg basket. 
🐓Joni Eggshell: A true gem, she produces beautiful olive green eggs, bringing a unique color to our collection.
🐓Pebbles: Her speckled light brown eggs are a delightful sight, showcasing nature’s artistry.

These lovely ladies are not only charming companions but also contribute to the vibrant palette of our daily harvest. Stay tuned for more updates as they settle into their new home!

The Eastern Meadowlarks Are Back! 🌾🎶

Spring mornings just got a little more magical with the return of the Eastern Meadowlark to our fields! Their bright yellow chests and flute-like songs are a sure sign of the season’s change.

Sadly, these beautiful birds are declining in numbers due to habitat loss and are now considered threatened in many parts of their range. But here at The Farmer’s House, we’re committed to providing a welcoming space for them. By maintaining open grasslands and preserving natural habitat, we help give them a safe place to thrive.

🐔 Important Update: Protecting Our Backyard Flock & Guests 🐔

The health and safety of our guests—and our beloved backyard chickens—are always top priorities. With the current risk of bird flu, we are taking proactive measures to protect our flock and ensure a safe environment for everyone.

🔹 Boot wash stations will be introduced once temperatures allow; for now, we are using a boot spray.
🔹 We are relocating feeders farther from the coop to reduce risks, and if needed, we will remove feeders once natural food sources return in the spring.
🔹 Chicken visits may be paused for the safety of our flock, depending on the situation.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate this. Our feathered friends bring so much joy to The Farmer’s House, and these precautions will help keep them—and our guests—safe. 💛
