Missed the Ferry, Killed the Battery, Dropped the Keys in the Outhouse... Eh?

Ever had a camping trip go so sideways you start wondering if the wilderness has a personal grudge against you?

Ever Seen a Giant Rock With More Culture Than Your Uncle at Thanksgiving?

What happens when 23 international sculptors, enormous chunks of stone, and the Alberta foothills get together?

Apparently, something pretty spectacular.

Just 10 minutes from Sundre, Alberta, Bergen International Sculpture Park is the kind of place that makes you wonder why more people aren't talking about it. Massive stone sculptures sit throughout the property, surrounded by the peaceful beauty of the Alberta landscape.

And these aren't your average garden ornaments.

The sculptures were created by artists from around the world during four international sculpture symposia, giving the park a fascinating mix of cultures, styles and stories. Some sculptures have since moved to public displays in nearby communities, including Olds and Sylvan Lake.

So if you arrive expecting to count 23 sculptures and come up short, don't worry. You haven't failed Art Class 101.

Is Highway 17 Just Showing Off Again, Eh?

Lake Superior Provincial Park is the kind of place that makes you pull over, stare at the scenery and wonder why your camera suddenly feels inadequate. This stunning stretch of Northern Ontario takes you along Highway 17 through rugged Canadian Shield landscapes, pristine beaches and the jaw dropping beauty of Old Woman Bay.

And yes, Old Woman Bay really does look this good.

WHAT THE HECK IS SCREAMING HEADS? Ontario Gets Weird. And We Love It.

Forget the usual roadside attractions. Because somewhere near Burk’s Falls, Ontario, the forest gets a little strange. Really strange.

Giant concrete heads. Massive sculptures. Winding trails. Quirky structures. And enough unexpected sights to make you wonder if you took a wrong turn somewhere between Muskoka and the Almaguin Highlands.

THIS EASY RED DEER TRAIL HIDES A WILD SIDE OF THE CITY
Think you need to leave Red Deer to find a little wilderness? Not even close.

The Dr. George Loop Trail packs forests, wetlands, boardwalks, wildlife viewing areas and interpretive features into an easy 1 km loop inside Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary.

And that’s the beauty of it.

Short enough for families and beginners. Interesting enough for birdwatchers and photographers. Peaceful enough for anyone who just needs to trade traffic noise for birdsong.

Located at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre, this is one of those trails that reminds you that nature can be surprisingly close to home.

One kilometre.

And a pretty good excuse to slow down and look around.

The Birds Are Showing Off. Newfoundland Is Letting Them.

Atlantic Puffins. Northern Gannets. Common Murres. Black legged Kittiwakes. And thousands upon thousands of seabirds packed onto dramatic cliffs above the North Atlantic. Yep. Newfoundland doesn't exactly do birding quietly.

Dr. Sonya Richmond explored three unforgettable birding destinations around St. John's and the Avalon Peninsula: Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve and Quidi Vidi Lake Important Bird Area.

There were massive seabird colonies. Rugged coastal scenery. Incredible wildlife encounters.

And then there was the Minke whale that apparently decided birding wasn't exciting enough.

RED DEER HAS A NATURE PLAYGROUND YOU NEED TO SEE

Forget the boring playground.

At Kerry Wood Nature Centre in Red Deer, kids can climb logs, crawl through hollow tunnels, balance their way through natural features, climb trees and let their imaginations run wild at Imagination Grove.

And then there’s Harmony Garden.

Wood. Metal. Rhythm. Sound.

Kids can experiment with music while surrounded by nature. Because apparently, a playground can be part forest, part adventure zone and part outdoor concert hall.

The grounds also offer picnic and rest areas, labeled trees, interpretive signs, the Jean Nichols Wildflower Garden, historic Allen Bungalow and access to Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary.

Best of all?

You can explore the outdoor grounds even when the Nature Centre building is closed.

So grab the family, head outside and see where curiosity takes you.

Sundre, Bearberry and a Weekend That Got Off the Beaten Path

Sometimes the best Alberta adventures start with a place you thought you already knew.

I’d driven past Starlite Diner more times than I can count. I’d visited Rocky Mountain House several times. And somehow, years had passed since I’d really explored Sundre.

That changed.

The Canada Adventure Seekers headed to Bearberry for our 2026 retreat, using this little corner of west central Alberta as our home base for a weekend of exploring, reconnecting, rediscovering and finding a few surprises along the way.

Because Alberta has a funny way of doing that.

You think you’re just going for a weekend…

Then suddenly you’re chasing views, discovering places you’ve driven past for years and wondering why you didn’t stop sooner.

From Sundre to Bearberry, this story takes you along for the adventure and shares some of the places and experiences that made this Canada Adventure Seeker retreat one to remember.

TUESDAY JUST GOT A LOT MORE ADVENTUROUS
Looking for a Muskoka adventure that gets the whole family off the ground?

This week on the EH Canada Travel Adventure Seeker Podcast, host Jesseca Perry joins Canada Adventure Seeker Anja Cahill to talk all about Treetop Trekking in Huntsville, Ontario.

Think climbing. Zip lines. Rope obstacles. Suspended platforms. Forest views.

And the occasional very Canadian thought of, “Well… that’s higher than it looked from the ground.”

Anja shares what it was really like taking on the Huntsville treetop courses with her husband and teenage children, from gearing up and learning the safety equipment to navigating aerial obstacles high among the Muskoka trees.
