Last year between July and December we had 5 feet of rain... this year, not so much... More drought-like.
My hay is mostly Timothy and went to head and to seed in May already... so by mid-June we had it cut.
We've hardly received rain since... so I had to buy hay again this year!
My, what-would-be second-cut hay is only 4 to 6 inches tall! Since the decision has finally been made that we are not going to cut it... I've gone ahead and fenced out a couple acres for the animals to munch on. I won't be able to reach it all with my fencing so that they can still get back to the barn for shelter and water... but they can at least get a lot to eat so I don't have to buy even more hay!
Holiday will be calving in the next 2 weeks... so she should have good grass to produce me a nice drink! I'm soooo looking forward to having my milk back again!
Sunday has been watching my movements since yesterday... she saw me putting the fence up and told Kelly about it. So this morning while I was hooking up the fencer, Sunday was right there... and when I'd checked the whole fence line to make sure no wild animals had messed with it in the night... I let her and Kelly into the hay field. I had to physically go and get Holiday and the sheep (which Argibel had earlier chased into the barn!)
Everyone seems happy... but Jingle Bells ๐ wasn't jingling too much... I was wondering if he was even there! But he shows up at the end! This fresh grass will be a great way to finish Jingle Bell and his brother up for Grass-fed lamb!
Pig Treats
Glad to say the pigs are back and behaving themselves! Even enjoying some watermelon ๐ ๐
Yes they are standing in the old cow feeder...
This is the creamiest milk I've ever gotten... if you can call it milk! Holiday has been a challenging cow... I knew she was holding the cream but I had no idea how much!!
I'm drying her off since this stunt anyway... Kelly has had her calf now and I'll start milking her tomorrow.
Ah the relaxing sounds of the spring peepers on the pond... until someone noticed unwanted guests!
Sunday afternoon bunnies!
