As a Lighting Consultant, there some projects that take a little more care than usual. I was asked to help a Church with their lighting up-grades that would coordinate with the upgrade of their Sanctuary. The budge was very tight and we eventually found a local lighting product manufacture to help us out. The local electrical contractor also made the project work very well and enabled us to create a great control system. The existing fluorescent lighting system was upgraded to LED pendants.
The lighting levels were a concern, but after a few ideas had been thought through, the result was perfect.
The Church was very happy with the result.
From my point of view, this turned out to be a very satisfying project.

CRK Designs and the "Re-Lighting" of a "Heritage" Church in Ladner BC.
I was asked to provide a re-design of the existing lighting for this "Heritage" Church. The Church was being re-modeled and lifted to fit better foundations and additional spaces. The walls and the "arched" ceiling was totally re-constructed.
The Church committee did not want any visible lighting such as pendents or recessed down-lights or "pot" lights.
The decorative architectural (wall to ceiling) wall detail around the perimeter of the spaces allowed me to design a totally indirect lighting. This detail had to be modified to allow for the lighting products. I encouraged the Church committee to allow for future pendents by asking the contractor to provide junction points in specific locations to allow for these additions. The existing "heritage" pendent lighting was hopefully saved to allow them to be re-installed at a later date.
Also needed was additional "down-lighting" in the the area where a Choir was to sit. I again asked the contractor to provide junction points for these future additions.
This is one time where the lighting needed to be hidden so the beautiful "Heritage" space could be featured. From a lighting point of view, the "arched" ceiling provided the lighting distribution for the spaces in this Church. It ended up a perfect solution. A quality lighting solution.
This was completed some time ago and today the LED technology has improved and is now more affordable. This also could have provided a quality lighting solution.

CRK Designs and Restaurant Lighting Design.
This was a very interesting lighting project with many challenges. I worked very closely with the interior design team to carefully design this very busy Japanese Restaurant. There are lots of extra spot feature lighting that are carefully selected to give the careful order to the busy theme lighting and other theme features. The one lighting task important was the accent lighting over the eating tables for patrons to cook and eat their food. The other was at the bar where accent lighting high-lighted the bar surface for the patron's pleasure as they watched the Chef cook the food.
The atmosphere worked well along with a multi-level lighting control system. Multiple "preset" lighting levels.
When I was asked to join this design team, I visited one of their existing restaurants and found one issue. Language was an issue and the easiest way to deal with the "house cleaning lighting" was to design a very "industrial" lighting system separate from the feature lighting system and its control. This lighting was normally "off" and hidden withing the open ceiling spaces. We labeled this one switch "Cleaning".

CRK Designs and residential lighting design.
Investigate the needs of the client and establish how they are going to use the spaces within the home. I have always thought that there are mainly two ways to light a space. High-light the furniture and the architecture of the space and hide the lighting so the features are the focus, ...or... feature the lighting and blend it into the architecture of the space. In this space, there is a view of the ocean with a full wall of windows, so this becomes the focal point. During non-daylight hours the windows become "MIRRORS" and hiding the lighting sources is very important. All lighted images show up in the windows at night including visible light sources, so hiding the light sources is a must. The only pendents in this space are over the kitchen island. The quality of the recessed down-lighting (pot-lights) also needs to be carefully selected. Lighting controls become very important to ensure there are options to alter the lighting for maximum views.
It is noted in this space, a pendent/chandelier over the dining table are absent. Hidden recessed accent lighting was used to show off the table and the table setting.
This carefully designed lighting system offers a pleasant space during both the day-time and the night-time.
This is not difficult, if the design is carefully thought out.

Hi !! Here is an example of a typical staff lunchroom that is a part time training space. Up-grading the lighting with LED lighting technology worked out very well. Energy savings to less than 50% of the existing lighting system. Control is also much better using LED technology with wireless control technology that can create separate lighting zones along with dimming. Now the staff lunchroom can now be used for many different functions even allowing a very dim atmosphere for a staff quiet time.
