A Celebration of Culture and Unity: Indonesia Shines at Carassauga Festival 2025
By Tunggul Tobing
Prepare to be enchanted as Mississauga welcomes the 40th anniversary of Carassauga Festival of Cultures—Canada's largest multicultural celebration. This year's Indonesia Pavilion, presented by the Indonesian Community Ontario (ICO), promises an extraordinary immersion into the archipelago's breathtaking diversity, from its UNESCO treasures to its living cultural wonders.
None of this would be possible without the tireless dedication of more than 100 passionate individuals—dancers, volunteers, culinary artisans, and cultural ambassadors—who have poured their hearts into creating this magnificent showcase. Their enthusiasm and hard work bring the spirit of Indonesia to life in Canada, and for this, we are profoundly grateful.
A Grand Showcase: "Journey to Kalimantan"
This year's theme, "Journey to Kalimantan: Land of Rivers, Rainforests, and Rich Traditions," invites visitors to explore the lush landscapes and cultural treasures of Borneo. From intricate Dayak woven crafts to the rhythmic beats of Kalimantan's traditional music, the pavilion will transport guests to Indonesia's wild and wondrous frontier.
But the celebration doesn't stop there. The Indonesia Pavilion will also feature performances from across the archipelago, including:
Nowela, the celebrated Indonesian Idol winner, live from Jakarta
Angklung ensemble, the mesmerizing bamboo orchestra recognized by UNESCO
Traditional dances from Bali, Java, Batak, West Sumatra, Papua, and more
A spectacular culinary bazaar offering some of most popular dishes from mie bakso (meatball noodle soup) to fragrant nasi campur (mixed rice with various toppings) – we have something to satisfy every craving
A Visual Feast: Indonesia's Living Heritage
Our passionate volunteers will dazzle your senses with:
Stunning traditional costumes from across Indonesia's diverse regions
Cultural displays showcasing UNESCO-recognized treasures like wayang puppetry and Borobudur
The Last Ark of Endangered Giants exhibition featuring Kalimantan's biodiversity
More Than a Festival: A Force for Good
This year, the Indonesia Pavilion goes beyond cultural celebration—it's also a platform for change:
Tucan Holistic will donate proceeds to shelters in Bali and elderly care at Panti Jompo Catur Nugraha Kaliori in Banyumas
Their initiative connects to an inspiring Kilimanjaro climb for charity
Handicraft sales support education initiatives in rural Indonesia
"Every dish served, every performance shared helps uplift communities back home," says an ICO member. "When you join us, you're not just experiencing Indonesia, you're helping protect its people."
