Give Get Go

Give Get Go Immerse yourself in a new culture, while lending your heart and hands. To what community-identified needs do the GiveGetGo projects respond?

GiveGetGo adventures pair volunteer building and travel, making for unforgettable, life changing vacations. The tangible rewards of GiveGetGo projects set it apart from the competition, as do its travel itineraries, which allow volunteers to get a true sense of the destination they are visiting. The company avoids using the word “voluntourism” because while they do combine volunteer work and touri

sm, these aspects are very separate elements to each trip. Relaxing in comfortable accommodations is central to each itinerary, whether it is during the build portion or travel portion of the trips. Our intentions within the developing world communities we work in are to build, renovate, and refurbish schools and orphanages for recognized Registered Canadian Charities. These projects are already community-identified needs as often established by the local ICA office. GiveGetGo does extensive pre project analysis by visiting, often several times to ensure a learned service experience fully cognoscente of community and project needs. We meet with ICA staff, learn about the entire community, and of course gain a complete understanding of the parameters of our project involvement. In addition all our partnership charities are well established with a long term commitment to these communities. How is the work of the international volunteer sustained after his or her departure? All our build projects are within extreme poverty locations. The buildings that we are helping build will be used for generations to come. We build, and we will return many times with many teams, often for several years. However, the facilities we help create will last for generations. And our chosen partner charities are there forever. It is a requirement of our assistance. Our charities are successful, well funded and will always maintain this new facility and children they serve, for generations. The communities they serve have entirely too many homeless children with little or no hope of perhaps even survival, let alone a decent education. If our charities were not there, these projects would not likely happen.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. We would like to take a moment and thank everyone who has made the building of My Melody School such a success. The school is almost complete. However, there is a dire need for teachers to educate all the students. Igor, the principal, is needing to add 3 teachers. The average salary for a teacher is Guatemala is $10,000. If you would like to help with this fundraising please click on the link and you will receive a tax receipt for your donation. Please drop down to #8 to make sure the money goes to teachers and curriculum https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/id/52866/. Thank you once again for changing the lives of these students.

Dear friends:
I hope you and your loved ones are well and staying healthy during these difficult times.

I am writing to give you an update on the situation here in Guatemala.

This year once again, the children were not able to come to school due to the covid-19 Pandemic. The ministry of education has said that there is a possibility the schools will reopen in March or April 2022. This depends on how the pandemic develops and also on the number of people that have received the vaccine. The government has started to bring vaccines for children 12 years old and up, but only a small amount of the young people have been vaccinated.

The pandemic situation in Guatemala is as follows: We have a total of 624 000 covid cases recorded and sadly 16700 passed away due to covid. 4.4 million people have received 2 vaccine shots which is equivalent to 27% of the people in the country.

The hospitals continue to be full right now and they run out of medicine to treat covid patients. Many families in our school have contracted the virus, but thankfully they all have survived. Some families have contracted the virus twice.

I can truly tell you that 2020 and 2021 have been the toughest years for our education project since we started back in 2008. We know that the pandemic also affected your lives, we are very sorry about that and we send you our best wishes and hope that you can recover soon. We understand that some times there was no room to help an education project in Guatemala. The result is that we saw a decrease in funds we received for our education project but still we have managed to complete our commitments with the families in our project and with the people that work with us. Also, it has been very difficult to motivate the students to do their work at home on their own. It has been very difficult to teach the subjects at a distance but still the teachers have done an amazing job and the result is that all the students completed their work and all the students managed to pass the grade. We are hopeful that the students will be allowed to come back to school in 2022 and with that things will get much better for them, us and you as well.

At this point I would like to thank all of you, because without your help we would not be able to do the work we do here in Guatemala. We wish you all the best in the New Year and hopefully life will be better for all of us in the near future.

Guatemala April 23rd, 2021

Dear friends:
I hope you are doing very well and staying safe and healthy during these difficult times.

I am writing to give you an update on the situation of our children and their families here in Guatemala. Right now, we have a total of 218,145 cases registered of covid 19 in the country, however these are just the people that have been tested. Many are not tested so the total number of cases is much higher. Sadly 7,345 people have lost their lives so far due to the pandemic. I also have to report that so far, the country has received only 5000 vaccines donated by Israel and 80,000 vaccines donated by India. The government has said that they bought enough vaccines for half of the population of Guatemala but none of them have arrived yet. The donated vaccines were given to the doctors and nurses in the country. Unfortunately, some of the vaccines disappeared from where they were being stored, and in the news we found out that all the students at the most expensive private university in the country were also vaccinated. Also, in the news we found out that the government had bought a shipment of covid testing kits that was found to be fake and that is was worth millions of dollars. So those are some of the problems that we are seeing here in Guatemala.

Also, I have to report that I have confirmation from the families in our school, that six families have contracted the covid 19. When they went to the local hospital, they were all turned away as the hospital is completely full. So, they all had to return home and cure themselves using home remedies. Many of the people in these families got really sick, especially the older ones, but I am very happy to report that all the people in these families were able to survive. I think there are more families in our school that contracted the virus but do not want to tell, as people look down on families that have the disease. We have heard of cases of families that were forced to leave their homes because the neighbours have got together and threatened these families as they blame them for bringing the covid 19 to their community. What some doctors have recommended to us is for the families to do gargles with salt water so that when the virus is still in the throat, it can be killed by the salt water. This is what many families in our school are doing to try to avoid getting sick.

Also, I would like to inform you that most families have adapted to the current situation we live in. The ones that lost their jobs have found new ones or have created their small businesses; they still are not doing as well as before the pandemic started but at least they are able to survive. We had some of our students that left the school, this is due to the families moving to a different town where the parents work. Before the pandemic the parents used to travel to their work places but now the bus fare is so expensive now that they were investing most of their pay cheque in transportation. As a result, they opted for moving to the town where they work and the children are now going to a school in that town.

As for the students, they continue to receive assignments they can do at home. We do this since the ministry of health and the ministry of education do not give us permission to open the schools yet. Now the students receive a package of assignments every two weeks, the teachers grade them and do a follow up if they see the students did not understand something or did not do their homework. The result is that the students have completed most of their assignments and are doing well. Many of the parents have told me that their children miss the school, their teachers and friends. Many times, the children ask their parents to at least take them to school the day they receive their assignments, this so they can at least see the school one time. On Wednesday I handed out the biweekly assignments and the girl you see below stayed behind and wanted to tell me something but would not dare to. Finally, her mother told me that she and her sisters had made a letter to their teachers saying that they missed them very much and they hoped that they could return soon to school. The last time the students saw their teachers and their friends was on March 13th 2020, to them is a huge part of their lives.

I also visit students at home, especially if they are falling behind in their homework. Last week I visited one of the older boys who is now 16 years old and among other things he told me that he really wants to finish his education and graduate. He told me that due to the pandemic his father does not have as much work as before. Since he is the older child in the family, he has looked for work to help his family. His father took him to the construction job where he was working at the time and was told that the only job they could offer our student was to carry materials to the construction site. The construction site was on the 16th floor of a building in the capital city of Guatemala. The materials were delivered to the basement of the building and since the owner of the building did not want the workers to dirty the elevator, they had to carry ALL the construction materials to the top. The job of our student was to carry 100 lb sacks of cement on his back from the basement to the sixteenth floor all day long, earning about 100 CDN a month. Our student told me that he did not want to do that kind of job for the rest of his life and that he really wants to become an architect. I think he can do it.

Similar to this student we have other students selling food with their mother using a wheel barrel and going house to house. Some of them take care of farm animals, some clean houses, some make tortillas with their mother, some gather wood for cooking, some help in a mechanic shop, etc.

I also want to inform you that thanks to your generosity we were able to provide food money to the families in our school for a total of 8 months. We have given the money to the families in the school and we are very thankful to all of you as this money helped the families in the crucial months last year during the beginning of the pandemic.

At this point I would like to thank you once again for your kindness and remind you that thanks to you many children will be able to get out of poverty through education.

Seven years ago today we broke ground at My Melody School and today we now have 6 completed class rooms. Many thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who either physically helped build the classrooms or donated their time or money to make this happen. Our hearts and prayers are with all the teachers and students at this time as they struggle with the devastating effects from Covid. The school has been a safe haven for these families distributing food and supplies donated by many of our volunteers, family and friends.

We would like to share a letter from Igor, the principal of Melody School. Once again thank you everyone who donated to help the students and their families.

Dear Friends:
I hope you and your loved ones are doing well and staying safe and healthy. I am writing to give you an
update on the situation here in Guatemala. Now we have over 65,000 cases of Covid in the country and
sadly 2,500 people have lost their lives due to the pandemic. On the other hand, I am happy to report
that all the children of our school and their families are doing well health wise. Unfortunately many of the parents have lost their jobs or have much lower incomes than they used to have before the pandemic started, which makes their lives a lot more complicated than they used to be. Thanks to all of you, we are able to help all of the families in our school to get through these difficult times. I am very happy to report that we were able to collect over $26,000 CAD for the families, thanks to all of you who decided to help those less fortunate people in our community. With these funds each family will be able to get 4 months of food supplies worth $100 each. We already distributed the first
installment to the families. We decided to give it to them in cash as each family has different needs. Most of them bought food with it, but some needed medicine, some do not have water at home so they used part of the money to pay the water truck to deliver water to their homes, etc. Many of the parents came to me and asked me to thank you for the help you are giving them. They told me that this help truly will make a difference as it comes at a time when their situation is really complicated. Quite a few of the mothers cried when I gave them the money as they were desperate and did not know where to turn to for help. They told me that it was very kind of you to help them even
though you have never met them, and they said that they will never forget what you did for them in these very difficult times.
As for the students, they continue to receive assignments
they can do at home. Our teachers have done a great job
explaining the different subjects in a written form and
the result is that ALL the students have been able to
complete their homework. On the left you can see the school supplies and assignments that each student gets every month.
We have been told by the ministry of education that this
year the schools will not reopen any more. Now we have
to wait to see how the situation develops and then the
ministry will take a decision on when schools will
reopen in 2021.
At this point I would like to thank you on behalf of all our children and their families for this wonderful gift. We have a big debt to all of you and I hope one day we can find a way to repay you for this extremely kind gesture.
Sincerely,

CALL TO ACTION: To all our volunteers, donors and friends of Melody School in Chimaltenango. We just received the following letter from Igor, the principal of Melody School. If there is any way you can help out with a donation, it would mean the world to the students and their families. We all know that the school is the life line for many of these children. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear friends:

I hope you are doing very well and staying safe and healthy during these difficult times.

I am writing to give you an update on the situation of our children and their families here in Guatemala. Last time I wrote to you we only had a few cases of covid 19 and a few deaths. Right now we have almost 16,000 cases and 600 people have died because of the disease. Luckily for our families, they are all doing well health wise.

The biggest problem we have right now is that the economy has been shut down for over three months. There are no buses running, many business have been forced to close, the demand on many services has decreased to nearly nothing, there are no tourists, the restaurants are closed, we are not allowed to leave our province and in some cases our towns. All of these situations mean that all our families have lost their means of subsistence. Many of the parents of our children worked selling food and other basic items at the markets, but the markets have been closed. Others used to work at restaurants which also have been closed. Others used to work in Guatemala city but are not able to travel to work or their jobs have disappeared. Others work planting vegetables but due to the travel restrictions have not been able to take their harvest to the markets and have lost their crops. And the list goes on and on.

As a result of this situation we have seen things that we had never seen before. There are many people that come out to the streets with white flags. What that means is that they are asking for any food that people can spare as they are literally starving. And many of the families of our children are very close to that situation. For that reason I am now asking, if any of you would like to help these families to buy some food, please donate any amount at the link below so we can help them get through this difficult time. Any amount will help and donations over $25 will get a tax receipt from Medicos en Accion. $100 can buy food for a family of 5 for a month. I would be very grateful if you could send this information to your acquaintances to see if anybody else would like to help.

https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/my-melody-building-materials-fund/

Also I want to inform you that our teachers have been working all of this time and have prepared lessons so that our students can continue working at home. The families that have cell phones receive the lessons in them and the ones who do not have them come to our school where we give them printouts of their work.

So far it has been working very well, but as I said above the biggest problem right now is the food situation. Thank you once again for your kindness and all the best to you and your loved ones.
