📱 SOCIAL MEDIA: GOOD FOR US OR BAD FOR US?

Social media has become a huge part of our lives — but is it helping us more than it is hurting us?

On one hand, I’ve seen incredible examples of social media being used for good. A missing child can be found because thousands of people share a post. Someone in need can receive help. Important information can reach people within minutes. Communities can come together in ways that were almost impossible before.

But on the other hand, we’ve also seen the darker side. Misinformation, bullying, harmful influences, addiction, unhealthy comparisons, and dangerous online trends can have serious consequences. Sometimes the influence of social media can even contribute to people making tragic decisions.

So, what is the real answer?

Is social media good or bad for society—or does it depend on how we use it?

👉 Does social media bring us closer together, or push us further apart?
👉 Should platforms take more responsibility for harmful content?
👉 Are parents, schools, governments, or users themselves responsible for teaching people how to use social media safely?
👉 Can the good outweigh the bad?

VOICES OF DISSENT wants to hear your voice.

As a long-time resident of the neighbourhood since 1995, I have seen many changes over the years. Our community around Resilience Montreal (780 Atwater Ave.) was once a clean, quiet, and family-friendly place where people felt comfortable walking in the evenings.

Today, many residents no longer feel safe. Every night, families, seniors, women, and children go for walks to enjoy the cooler weather, but they are often confronted by individuals who appear to be intoxicated or experiencing serious mental health issues. Some shout at people, harass women, or even push pedestrians. I have personally experienced this myself.

Many residents feel that these incidents are not being addressed adequately. Too often, action seems to happen only after someone calls 911. Some families hesitate to report incidents because they worry it may create additional problems or lead to retaliation, so many situations go unreported.

The stretch from Lionel-Groulx to Saint-Henri along Notre-Dame Street is generally a quieter area, yet these issues occur seven days a week. Individuals are sleeping on sidewalks, in parks, and in public spaces. As a result, our streets and parks have become dirtier, and many residents no longer feel comfortable or safe walking at night.

This is not about blaming people who are struggling with mental illness or homelessness. They deserve compassion, proper mental health care, housing, and support services. At the same time, residents also deserve to feel safe in their own neighbourhood.

We respectfully ask the City of Montreal, community organizations, and law enforcement to work together to improve public safety, provide better outreach and mental health support, and help restore the cleanliness and security of our neighbourhood for everyone.

Sometimes the world reminds you how different people can be.

Today I was sitting beside the Lachine Canal, enjoying the beautiful weather and a moment of peace. Yet, not one, but several people seemed determined to disturb that peace. One man even pushed my leg, as if to tell me I wasn't welcome to sit there and relax.

I could have reacted with anger. I could have started an argument. Instead, I chose peace.

A little while later, a white lady covered in tattoos walked by. Many people might judge her by her appearance or feel uncomfortable before even speaking to her. She simply smiled, asked me, "Do you love someone?" I replied, "Yes, I love God." She handed me a rose and continued on her way.

That moment reminded me of something important: appearances don't define kindness, and a person's skin color doesn't define their worth.

Yes, there are people in this world who try to take away your peace. But there are also people who restore it with the smallest acts of kindness.

Don't let the bad ones make you forget the good ones. Choose peace over anger, kindness over judgment, and never assume you know someone's heart just by looking at them.

Sometimes, a single rose can outweigh a hundred moments of negativity. 🌹

HISTORY MADE AT FIFA WORLD CUP 2026! 🇨🇦❤️💚🇧🇩

As a proud Canadian-Bangladeshi, words cannot describe the absolute chills of watching the opening ceremony! Seeing our own Bangladeshi boy Sanjoy Dev share the world’s biggest stage with the phenomenal Nora Fatehi and Vegedream was an unforgettable moment!

Hearing "Siir Siir" rock the stadium was electric, but seeing Sanjoy proudly pointing to the Royal Bengal Tiger, the shapla, and our red-and-green flag embroidered on his sleeve completely stole the show! Talk about carrying your roots wherever you go. 🐯✨

Huge congratulations to this incredible trio for an iconic, high-energy performance that set the stage on fire! Nora, you made Canada so proud on home turf, and Sanjoy, you just showed the global stage what Bangladeshi talent looks like. 🙌⚽️🔥

📢 IMPORTANT MESSAGE: About Recent Bank & Digital Income Situation (Creators & Freelancers)

Recently, there has been a lot of discussion around a 7.5% deduction on foreign digital income (YouTube, Meta, freelancing payments) in Bangladesh. Many creators noticed this deduction and it created confusion and strong reactions online.

───

⚠️ What we should understand /

This situation is not about blaming one person or one bank. In most cases, these matters are related to system rules, tax interpretation, and regulatory processes.

───

❗ Important update /

Following feedback and concern from the creator and freelancer community, banks have reportedly paused or suspended the automatic 7.5% deduction in many cases while the matter is being reviewed.

───

⚠️ What everyone should NOT do / যা করা উচিত না

🚫We should NOT:
• Harass or blame individual bank employees
• Create public pressure on individuals
• Spread incomplete or one-sided information
• Take justice into our own hands outside legal process

───

✅ What we SHOULD do / যা করা উচিত
✔ Follow official complaint procedures
✔ Contact bank customer service properly
✔ Request written clarification when needed
✔ Wait for verified updates from authorities
✔ Keep communication respectful and calm

───

📌 Final message /
Social media is powerful. But with power comes responsibility. One incident or one video can affect many lives, so we must be careful how we react and respond.

Supporting Community Spirit — Montréal’s Biggest Outdoor Fair That Offers Much-Needed Free Family Fun

MONTRÉAL — In today’s challenging economic climate, finding affordable, high-quality family entertainment can feel nearly impossible. As household budgets tighten globally, community-driven events become more than just a weekend plan — they become vital spaces for connection, relief, and joy.

That is why our blog page is proud to spotlight and support organizations like the Bangladesh Socio-Cultural Forum-Canada

This summer, they are stepping up for the Montréal's Bangladeshi community by hosting their flagship outdoor festival, the 9th Annual Bangla Mela 2026, completely FREE of admission.

At a time when inflation impacts everything from groceries to concert tickets, an entirely free, all-inclusive cultural festival is a massive win for local families.

Why Events Like This Matter Now More Than Ever!

When times are tough financially, isolation can easily set in. By keeping entry completely free, the organizers are ensuring that financial barriers do not stop families from coming together to enjoy the vibrant colors, sounds, and flavors of Bangladesh.

We highly encourage our readers to head out, experience this incredible cultural exchange, and show their support for grassroots initiatives that keep our communities connected and thriving.

Montreal really needs to rethink its traffic and road planning. I have no issue with bike lanes, but during winter, piles of snow make most of them unusable. Why place bike lanes on roads with yield signs that already have limited space?

Everywhere you go there are detours, road closures, and intersections where only two sides are open while traffic lights operate as if all four are. Many roads are blocked for weeks with no visible work, and even at night, closures remain while no one is working.

To make it worse, the car registration price went up, yet we’re driving on roads that feel like off-road tracks in the jungle. With Metro closures and traffic jams everywhere, Montreal has become a maze of frustration.
