**Historical summary : Originally known as Arelate, Arles was originally a Celto-Ligurian town that was transformed into a Greek colony in the 5th century BC. Thanks to its alliance with Marseille, it prospered as a major port and trading center. In 46 B.C., Julius Caesar granted Arles the status of a Roman colony, making it a key player in the conquest of Gaul.
Arles, a city of undeniable charm, offers a rich palette of attractions: a fascinating history spanning millennia, a dynamic culture and an exceptional artistic heritage. Nestled on the banks of the Rhône, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, this town is the perfect base from which to explore the wonders of the Camargue, Crau and Montagnette. Renowned for its artistic and historical importance, Arles is on UNESCO's World Heritage list thanks to its Roman and Romanesque monuments. It has also seduced and inspired many artists, including Vincent van Gogh.
