Ways You Can Miss a Flight

Well, not surprisingly, the main reason flights are missed is because of traffic or oversleeping. But not always! There are many ways to miss flights. And they aren’t just based on how late you arrive to the airport. Here are some other ways you can be left behind…
First, you misread your boarding pass. Your boarding pass clearly states your departure time, boarding time and the end of boarding time. When the doors close. It’s not uncommon for travelers to glance at their travel document and think the wrong time is for boarding. And if you show up at the end of the boarding time even while the plane is still there, they might not let you on.
Another way you can miss your flight is getting caught up enjoying the airport amenities. If you travel quite a bit you have probably notice that airports are upping their game on restaurant choices, spa treatments and shopping. Not to mention those lounges that you can buy day-passes to. Go ahead and enjoy yourself if you have enough time. Just keep an eye on the clock.
Another way that you can miss your flight is by leaving the gate area during a delay. Just because they say a delay will be 1 hour doesn’t mean it will stay that way. If they get the issue resolved before that, they aren’t going to wait the full hour. They will board the passengers and go! If they are calling your name and you are too far out to hear it, you can easily miss your flight.
And don’t forget that everyone is on-board they can leave early. Just because a flight is scheduled to close its doors at 9.30am, doesn’t mean they won’t close their doors at 9.20am if almost everyone is boarded. They will call you a few times but if you are out of ear shot of the PA system, you are out of luck.
And don’t forget to account for customs line ups and security. Depending on how busy the airport is, you can easily get help up at customs and security for much longer than you anticipated. Just another reason to give yourself ample time.
And, technology now makes it easier than ever to keep up with departure status at the airport. If you want to keep on top of your flight situation you can sign up for email or text notifications or you can download an app like Flight Aware that gives real time updates.

Avoid Passport Problems

So many travellers often forget to check the passport rules for each individual country that they’re visiting. This can lead to a lot of problems before the trip even beings, or worse… problems while in destination. Here are a few common rules to look into before every trip.

Most countries will have a set time frame in which your passport must remain valid from the date of your departure. Keep in mind; this is usually the date of your departure from your destination… not the date of arrival. Every country is different; some require 3 months while some require 8, so search each of your destinations on travel.gc.ca to find out what the entry and exit requirements are.
If you find that you will need to renew your passport before your trip, be aware that these can take time. If you’re lucky they may be able to rush it for you, but that’s never a fun waiting game. Check the requirements as early as possible so that you have adequate time for a renewal.
Also a reminder that children cannot get a 10 year passport --- only a 5 year passport - which may mean that the adults in the house may have a different renewal date that the kids.
Another situation for families when renewing passports is if your children’s passports was issued before they were 16 years old. You can use the passport until it’s expired. But after age 16, they will have to apply for an entirely new adult passport.
Another overlooked problem is damage to the passport itself. If it is ripped, water damaged or even just noticeably bent, it may be invalid. This depends on the severity of the damage and the strictness of the airport, but it’s best to get it replaced if there’s even a slight imperfection.
And keep in mind that a valid passport on its own may not even be enough. Some countries require 3 to 6 months validity after the date you leave their country. Some require 2 blank pages in your passport – like South Africa. Others require a valid passport and a travel visa. Visas can take weeks to attain and cost anywhere from 20 to 200 dollars. Some countries allow an electronic visa, or will grant visas at the airport, but some you will need to obtain in advance- so check the requirements for all of your destinations at “travel.gc.ca”.
