Everyone has that one piece of gear they would not camp without. For me it is this old Coleman percolator. We are out at Stamp River in Port Alberni this week, using our own stuff for once, and it is a good reminder of why we rent the gear we do. If it is not good enough for my own family, it does not go out.

Got a call today from a customer still on the ferry.

“We dock in Nanaimo in 45 minutes. Any chance we can rent a package? We will be there in an hour.”

I laughed and told him to give me a minute.

Called him back. Pulled the gear. By the time they rolled off the ferry it was packed and ready to go.

No plan. No problem. Off to Tofino within the hour.

There is something about watching the day slow down at Departure Bay.

Ferries coming and going. The beach emptying out. The light turning gold and then pink as the sun drops behind the mountains.

So she helped me get the Apache ready for next week’s rental.

A little setup, a little cleaning, and a lot of time together.

This is what a family business looks like. Everyone pitches in and the kids are part of it.
