DARK HISTORY | Gallows of Hamilton's Barton Jail

Terrifyingly imposing walls of Hamilton’s old Barton Street Jail. In an iconic photo showing its grim local history.

For years, Canadian Hangings were public spectacles for blood-thirsty residents. But then they were banned across Canada on New Year's Day in 1870.

Not stopped! As the gallows were moved behind closed walls like the Barton Jail.

The 1st was Michael McConnell in 1876. Convicted of the brutal stabbing of his landlord, Nelson Mills, over a $14 ($430 today) rent dispute.

Included one of the first insanity defenses in all of Canada. Didn't work! As the illustration shows, he met the Gallows on March 14, 1876.

GHOST STORY | Phantom Train of Albion Falls

On East Hamilton Mountain, Mount Albion was a village near today's Albion Falls.

It was founded by William Davis, a United Empire Loyalist who settled in Saltfleet Township around 1792.

It was considered a rough mill town for many generations. And a mob dumping ground!

In the summer of 1876, tragedy struck in Albion when a man named Thomas English was killed by a passing train while walking along the railway at night.

And soon after, strange lights appeared along the same stretch of track.

For the next fifty years, residents reported seeing the phantom train gliding silently along the rails on warm summer nights. Locals grew accustomed to the sight, easily accepting it as a ghostly echo of Tom English’s horrific death.

But the truth was far less exciting.

The railway crossed an area where Twenty Mile Creek ran through a swampy depression. The bog, filled with decaying vegetation and timber produced gas. Known then as a “will-o’-the-wisp”.

This formed luminous globes that drifted through the night air … like moving train lights.

The deception was convincing. Generations believed they were witnessing a ghost train!

Today, the swamp has vanished and with it … the Phantom Train of Albion Falls.
