Heavy industry is creating some increasingly big lifting challenges. As new mining, power generation, and major industrial projects take shape across North America, the equipment supporting these operations has to be designed around larger components and more demanding material handling requirements.

At WF Group of Companies, we’re seeing that shift firsthand through more project opportunities involving high-capacity overhead crane systems. These applications require specialized engineering and close coordination between the crane, supporting structure, controls, and operating environment.

As industrial infrastructure evolves, so do the lifting systems built to support it.

What does five years of crane engineering and manufacturing look like? For WF, it meant helping equip one of Canada’s most significant potash projects.

Our work on BHP's Jansen Stage 1 Potash Project in Saskatchewan began in 2020 with the engineering scope for the mine’s overhead crane requirements. By 2023, the project had moved into full-scale manufacturing, resulting in 20 custom overhead cranes, 20 monorail hoists, and five jib cranes for above-ground and underground applications.

Built for the demands of a potash mining environment, the equipment moved through engineering, fabrication, assembly, and testing at WF before our crane scope was successfully completed in spring 2025.

We’re proud to see WF-built lifting equipment become part of the infrastructure supporting the future of potash mining in Saskatchewan.

There’s a big difference between designing a crane to lift 10 tonnes and engineering one to lift 100.

As lifting capacity increases, so does the complexity behind the system. The crane, hoist, girders, supporting structure, controls, and operating environment all have to be considered around the demands of the application.

These high-capacity overhead cranes play an important role in major mining, power generation, nuclear, and heavy industrial operations, where moving exceptionally large equipment can be part of the job.

At WF Group of Companies, our in-house crane capabilities span engineering, girder fabrication, assembly, and testing for lifting requirements ranging from everyday applications to 100+ tonne systems.

25 years at WF, and quite the journey along the way! 👏 Mike Prybysh joined WF in September 2001, starting from the ground up before pursuing his electrical apprenticeship and earning his Journeyman Electrician designation.

Over the years, his career has taken him from the shop to field installations, crane service and wiring, and eventually into a number of leadership roles across the company.

Today, Mike serves as Maintenance Manager and oversees our Crane Completion Shop, bringing decades of hands-on experience to the team while continuing to expand his skills and industry knowledge.

Through every role, Mike has remained committed to the people, quality of work, and values that have shaped WF over the years.

Congratulations on 25 years, Mike! Thank you for everything you've contributed to WF along the way 🎉

By the time an industrial module leaves the fabrication shop, hundreds—or even thousands—of individual steel components have come together with one destination in mind.

Modular steel fabrication lets you build and assemble significant portions of an industrial structure in a controlled shop environment before transporting them to site. Getting there requires careful coordination from the earliest project details through fabrication and final inspection.

At WF Group of Companies, our structural steel capabilities support large-scale industrial projects with modular steel, skids, and custom-fabricated structures built around each project's requirements.

The demands of a mine look very different from those of a manufacturing facility, refinery, power plant, or steel warehouse.

👉 Different loads need to be handled. Different environments need to be accounted for. Different operational challenges need to be solved.

That range is where WF Group of Companies brings decades of industrial experience to the table. Our teams work with customers to understand the realities of their operation and develop lifting and structural solutions around the project—not simply the industry it falls within.

With experience supporting major projects across Canada, WF has built a depth of knowledge that carries from one challenging application to the next.

Some of Canada’s most demanding industrial environments depend on steel built to perform for the long haul.

Heavy equipment, substantial loads, complex layouts, and challenging operating conditions all influence how an industrial structure needs to be designed and fabricated. Getting those fundamentals right creates a reliable foundation for the operations that depend on it every day.

At WF Group of Companies, our structural steel fabrication capabilities support projects across manufacturing, energy, mining, infrastructure, and other heavy industrial sectors. With detailing, fabrication, assembly, and quality control handled in-house, our team has the expertise and capacity to take on complex requirements at scale.

It’s an important part of what makes WF a turnkey industrial partner—bringing together the people and capabilities needed to support major projects across Canada.
