Northern Vancouver Island and the Broughton Archipelago offer rare access to a coast where wildlife, culture, and place are deeply intertwined.

Traveling slowly under sail, we witness marine life, coastal black bears, and the living heritage of First Nations whose presence continues to shape these waters. These annual fall October 2026 voyages are about more than seeing the coast—it’s about learning from it. Previously known as Whales & Totems, this great voyage is now titled to match the geographic region 'Fall Northern Vancouver Island' onboard Island Solitude.

Bluewater naturalist Rob Lott shares his perspective of this incredible region.

Sailing and under sail.⛵️🐋 🦅

Sharing the water with humpback whales and bald eagles, we’re reminded that wildlife encounters aren’t something to chase—they happen when you move quietly, patiently, and in rhythm with the magical coast of Haida Gwaii, Gwaii Haanas.

Khutzeymateen Spring 2026.

In places this remote, wonder isn’t rare—you just have to slow down enough to see it. 🌈

Our first Khutzeymateen trip of the season has wrapped up! Sailing, grizzly bears, white sand beaches: it felt great to be out there again

Across Haida Gwaii, spring unfolds across a mosaic of habitats, from sheltered wetlands to the vast open Pacific ocean.

Sandhill Cranes return to coastal meadows, estuaries, and tidal flats, drawn to the freshwater and lowland areas where they nest and feed.

Along the outer coast, Bald Eagles define the shoreline—perched in old-growth forests and on remote islets, always close to the food-rich waters that sustain them.

Further offshore, the landscape shifts once more. Horned and Tufted Puffins cluster around rugged islands and steep cliffs, while Black-footed Albatross roam far beyond, tracing long, effortless arcs over the open ocean.

From quiet marsh to pelagic expanse, Haida Gwaii in spring is a place of constant motion—an intricate, living system shaped by water, season, and the birds that return to it each year.🦅

In Haida Gwaii this weekend, Island Solitude rested quietly as a pod of dolphins chose the moment—circling, surfacing, and lingering alongside.

In these nutrient-rich waters, wildlife encounters unfold on their own terms—unhurried, authentic, and deeply memorable. This is the rhythm of the coast: wild, present, and profoundly alive.

Thanks to our Solitude Mate for brightening our day 🐬💕

Safe travels Island Roamer! ⛵

Island Roamer pushed off this morning to make her way north to Prince Rupert. Island Roamer covers a lot of ground in our operating season running trips in the Khutzeymateen, Haida Gwaii, Southeast Alaska, and the Great Bear Rainforest. She has been around the coastal waters of BC for many decades, but still manages to experience new and incredible highlights every season.

Looking forward to welcoming our Island Roamer guests aboard shortly!

A white spirit bear mom can raise a litter of entirely black cubs—and every one of them quietly carries her rare gene forward. 🐻

Nature has its own way of keeping magic alive.

This Mother's Day, we're celebrating all the wild moms out there raising the next generation. 🌲

Thanks to Jenny Varley for this incredible photo📸 on one of our Great Bear Rainforest voyages.
