Few places on Earth are as closely connected to bears as British Columbia's Great Bear Rainforest. Stretching along the remote Central Coast of Western Canada, this vast wilderness is one of the last strongholds for some of North America's most iconic bear species.
The rainforest is home to black bears, grizzly bears, and the legendary Spirit Bear, a rare, white-coated black bear found almost nowhere else in the world. These bears are the true ambassadors of this remarkable ecosystem, relying on ancient forests, healthy rivers, and abundant salmon runs to survive and thrive.
Each year, salmon return from the Pacific Ocean to spawn in the rainforest's rivers and streams. For bears, this seasonal feast is essential. Watching a grizzly chase salmon in shallow estuaries or spotting a black bear foraging along a secluded spawning stream offers a glimpse into some of the amazing wildlife encounters we are privileged to witness.
The elusive Spirit Bear is perhaps the most well-known resident of the Great Bear Rainforest. Revered by Coastal First Nations for generations, this rare bear symbolizes the uniqueness and fragility of this rich and diverse region.
While humpback whales and other marine life contribute to the richness of the coast, the bears remain the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. Their presence reflects the health of the entire ecosystem, from the salmon-filled rivers to the towering cedar and spruce forests.
The Great Bear Rainforest is more than just a destination. It is bear country in its wildest and most spectacular form, a place where these magnificent animals continue to roam largely as they have for thousands of years.
