Playtime is over only when a silverback says so…

At least that’s what it looked like… 🙄

One of the most fascinating things about spending time with mountain gorillas is how often their family dynamics feel so familiar.

The youngsters never seem ready for playtime to end, while the adults gently keep order within the group.

Watching these siblings interact was a beautiful reminder that family bonds, curiosity, and affection aren’t uniquely human.

Sometimes, deep in the jungles of Uganda, you realize we may not be all that different after all.

The wildlife encounters are only part of the story…

What happens when you spend more than 20 days exploring the African wilderness?

Over the past few weeks, Jo and Jim have journeyed through some of Tanzania’s most spectacular landscapes — from the lush forests of Lake Manyara and the wildlife-rich floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, to Ndutu, Moru, Central Serengeti, and the vast open plains of Eastern Serengeti.

Along the way, there have been some incredible encounters:

More than 130 elephants.
Plenty of lions.
4 black rhinos.
2 servals.
Cheetahs on the hunt.

Several leopards, including one resting in a distant tree.
And a lion cub perched in a tree in the south-central Serengeti alongside five of its siblings.

But who’s counting?

A safari is never just about the numbers.

It’s about the anticipation of what might be waiting around the next corner. The early mornings before the wilderness wakes up. The excitement of discovering something unexpected. The stories that begin long before the camera comes out.

And perhaps that’s the most remarkable part of all.

No matter how much you’ve already seen, the wilderness always seems to have one more story left to tell. Even after nearly three weeks, Tanzania is still finding new ways to surprise them.

A heartfelt thank you to Jim and Jo for choosing to travel with us and for allowing us to share the beauty of the African wilderness with you.

How do you know a place is getting under your skin?

When the sounds, the smells, and the unhurried pace of pole pole begin to feel familiar.

Over the past few days, Darlene has been exploring Uganda’s wild corners — from the powerful waters of Murchison Falls and the Nile River to forests filled with chimpanzees, birds, and countless other wildlife encounters.

There were special moments along the way.

A chimpanzee that looked like it had been put in “time out.”

A mother with her baby quietly tucked beside her — a sighting Darlene wasn’t even sure she had captured until she looked back at her photos.

And, of course, the elephants, giraffes, hippos, buffalo, crocodiles, and endless birdlife that make Uganda so remarkable.

But what stayed with her most wasn’t something she saw.

It was something she heard.

The sounds of Uganda echoing through the landscape, creating a feeling she described as “a welcome to my home in the African wilderness.”

And perhaps that’s the greatest compliment a place can receive.

What do a baboon handprint, a Maasai warrior, and a hyena have in common?

They all became part of our wonderful VIP guests, the Wojton family’s story this week in Tanzania.

While many people dream about the wildlife, it’s often the unexpected moments that become the memories you talk about for years afterward.

From close encounters with elephants right from the doorstep of their lodge in Tarangire, to rhinos in the Ngorongoro Crater, and zebras, lions, and countless other wildlife encounters across Arusha National Park, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and the Ngorongoro Crater — every day has brought something new.

Then there was the baboon who decided to leave its signature on the back of the Wito Africa safari vehicle.

And one of the family members even made a new friend, sharing a conversation with a Maasai warrior by the pool at Neptune Ngorongoro as the sun dipped below the horizon.

This is what we love most about family safaris. The wildlife may bring you here, but it’s the collection of small moments in between that often become the most meaningful.

And speaking of meaningful moments, no safari is complete without an exceptional guide — someone who not only knows the wildlife and understands the wilderness, but who can also connect with guests on a personal level.

According to the Wojton family:

“Richard is AMAZING. We couldn’t have been matched with a better guide.”

We couldn’t agree more. Our naturalist guide, Richard has a remarkable gift for turning any safari adventure into an extraordinary experience.

Thank you, Wojton family, for allowing us to be part of your adventure. We have a feeling there are many more wild stories yet to be written in the Serengeti.

Ever seen this prehistoric bird?

Meet the shoebill — a living relic of the wild.

Earlier today, while exploring Uganda’s beautiful Mabamba Swamp, our wonderful guest Darlene experienced one of those rare moments that immediately slows everything down — spotting the legendary shoebill within minutes of entering the wetlands.

Quiet. Ancient. Almost unreal in appearance.

There’s something deeply humbling about standing before such an extraordinary creature in its natural habitat. Silent, powerful, and almost otherworldly, it’s the kind of encounter that stays with you forever.

And somehow, that photo with its eye gently closed captured the feeling perfectly.

The grunts. The movement. The dust rising across the horizon.

You can hear them long before you see them…Thousands upon thousands of wildebeest moving together across the Serengeti.

More than just the stars of the Great Migration, wildebeest are one of the most important species in this ecosystem, shaping the lives of countless predators, scavengers, and grazers along their journey.

As the sun sets over the Serengeti, the migration stretches across the plains in a breathtaking wave of life, dust, and motion — a timeless reminder of nature’s grandest spectacle.

They watch. They wait. They study the herd.

Ambush is one of a lion’s greatest strengths…

When faced with a herd of thousands of wildebeest, lions rarely rush in blindly. Instead, they rely on patience as much as power, carefully identifying the weakest or most vulnerable individual before making their move.

Only when the moment is right do they strike, turning timing and surprise into a meal.

They are large enough to stand out…

but gentle enough to make everything feel calm.

Their long necks, graceful walk, and quiet presence instantly give a landscape that unmistakable “Africa” feeling.

For many travelers, giraffes are among the first animals imagined when thinking about safari — slowly moving across golden grasslands with acacia trees stretching behind them.

And what makes them even more mesmerizing is the way they move. Almost like a slow dance across the plains, perfectly designed for the African wilderness.

Watching giraffes move across the African wilderness feels like watching the soul of the savanna in motion…

Giraffes somehow make even stressful situations feel calm, making everything around them seem like it belongs.

I just love how giraffes also bring balance to a scene. And somehow, that’s what makes them one of the most iconic symbols of Africa.

There’s always chaos with baboons…

But this was one of those tender moments before the entire troop arrived.
