Starting this Wednesday, January 8, 2025, all U.S. and Canadian travelers will need to apply for and receive approval for the new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before traveling to the United Kingdom. It’s one of many new rules coming to travel this year, and one that could end a trip before it starts if travelers are unaware.
The requirement applies to all travelers, regardless of their length of stay or purpose, including those simply transiting through a U.K. airport. The only ones exempt are British and Irish citizens.
The process requires a photo, personal details, passport information, and a £10 application fee.
Families and groups can streamline the process by allowing one person to apply on behalf of all members. In cases where an ETA application is denied, travelers will need to apply for a standard visa.
Officials in the U.K. say that traveler “will usually get a decision within 3 working days, but you may get a quicker decision,” but it may take longer. As the U.K. prepares to implement this system, travelers are strongly encouraged to apply early to avoid any potential disruptions to their travel plans.
For those that travel to the U.K. frequently, an approved ETA will last for at least two years, allowing travelers to use it as many times as they want in that time period.
