"Mr. Speaker,

Thousands of Ontarians sailed back to the year 1812 during this summer’s Tall Ships Tour.

The tour, presented by Redpath Sugar and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, and locally by the City of Owen Sound Economic Development department, saw majestic tall ships sailing to sixteen Ontario ports throughout the summer, commemorating the bicentennial of the War of 1812.

The tour proved to be a godsend for my riding of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound where it was held in conjunction and cross-promoted with the very successful Annual Summerfolk Festival.

The Pride of Baltimore II -- a 157-foot reproduction of an 1812-era topsail schooner privateer; the Playfair -- a 72-foot two-masted square-rigged brigantine; and Liana's Ransom - an 85-foot steel-hulled schooner -- sailed the Owen Sound Harbour between August 16th and 18th.

Early estimated attendance in Owen Sound, including both ticket purchasers and others who came to area to watch the tall ships, was well in excess of 15,000 people.

Attendance at Southern Georgian Bay was over 70,000 people, and for all tall ship venues across Ontario was over 900,000 people.

And, Mr. Speaker, Tall Ships Festival organizers Paul Eichhorn and Doug Cleverley said the ships were so popular, they could have sold twice as many tickets!

With tourism playing a key economic role in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, events such as this one are a valued and wonderful boost to our local business community and help to provide jobs at a time when they are surely needed.

Next time a fleet of Tall Ships sails into the Great Lakes is 2016 - so I hope the House joins me in encouraging the government to get on board and support the next one!"

Another great event in town this weekend, Sweetwater Music Festival. Sounds like another amazing line up for this annual event.

One of the concerts we are really looking forward to this year is the SweetWater Young Artist Concert which will feature artists originally from our region who are making waves in the classical music scene. Don't miss this concert featuring Kati Gleiser (piano), Sebastian Ostertag (cello) and Emily Aquin (violin) performing Veracini, Beethoven and Schumann on Saturday, September 21 at 6.30 PM at Georgian Shores in Owen Sound.
