The Bay of Fundy does not look, at first glance, like the most extraordinary body of water on earth. It sits quietly between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, a long finger of ocean pointing southwest from the Gulf of Maine. But twice a day, it performs a miracle. The tides of the Bay of Fundy rise and fall up to 16.8 metres -- the highest in the world. To put that in context, that is the height of a five-storey building, draining away and refilling in the space of six hours. The reason is resonance. The bay is approximately 270 kilometres long and shaped in a way that creates a natural sloshing effect, with a period of oscillation that almost perfectly matches the rhythm of the ocean tides. The two rhythms reinforce each other, amplifying the tidal range to extraordinary heights. In a single tidal cycle, approximately 160 billion tonnes of seawater flow in and out of the bay. The tidal bore, the wave that pushes up river mouths as the tide floods back in, can be surfed for kilometres along the Shubenacadie River in Nova Scotia. At low tide, the seafloor of the Fundy is exposed: red Triassic mudstone and clay, ribbed and ancient, stretching out flat for kilometres. Fossilised dinosaur footprints have been found in the Fundy cliffs. The tidal flats are so productive that up to 100 million shorebirds stop here during the annual migration to fuel up on the tiny invertebrates exposed by the receding water. The Bay of Fundy is on Canada's tentative UNESCO World Heritage list. It is one of the most remarkable places on the planet, and it belongs to Canada.

World Oceans Day was established by The United Nations and is celebrated on June 8th. The reason for doing so is to increase awareness about the critical issues that our oceans are facing. One of the most concerning problems is the accumulation and breakdown of plastic. This is everyone's problem.
