Secrets Tulum is a beautiful resort that most people expect to be on the beach, but it 𝙄𝙎𝙉’𝙏 actually on the beach – except the part that 𝙄𝙎 on the beach.🤷‍♂️

Here's how it actually works: Secrets Tulum Resort & Beach Club has two completely different areas.

1️⃣ THE MAIN RESORT
This is the big, gorgeous, jungle-style resort you see in the photos -- the circular buildings, rooftop pools, swim-up suites, restaurants, bars, entertainment, etc.

𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵.

When you want to go to the beach, there's a complimentary shuttle that takes you to the resort's beach club in Tulum's hotel zone.

2️⃣ CASA ZAMNA
Casa Zamna is a small collection of accommodations 𝗔𝗧 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗯. Casa Zamna guests have their own beachfront accommodations, oceanfront pool, and exclusive restaurant, but they also have access to the main Secrets Tulum resort.

Which means 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵, 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘁 when you want all of the restaurants, entertainment, and amenities over there.

🍂And just like that, everyone remembered winter is coming. 😂

It happens every year. We get through summer, the kids go back to school, September hits...and suddenly everyone remembers that eventually Cape Breton is going to look like THIS again.

And my inbox starts filling up with people thinking about getting the hell out of here in January and February.

Which means we're officially entering the part of the year where I start saying this a LOT:

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗶𝘁.

Not because I'm trying to convince you that every resort is about to sell out tomorrow -- they aren't. And not because booking early automatically means you're going to get some amazing price. Sometimes prices go down. Sometimes they go up. I don't have a crystal ball and neither does anyone else.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲.

🏨The resort you wanted instead of the fourth one on your list.

🛌🏻The room category that works for your family instead of whatever happens to be left.

Because here's what starts happening from this point on:

▪️The most convenient flights start filling up.
▪️Certain departure dates get harder to find.
▪️The most affordable room categories disappear.
▪️Family rooms disappear.
▪️Swim-outs disappear.

What you saw online a month or two ago might no longer available the way you expected it to be.

One of the worst parts of this job is having someone who has researched and found their ideal resort and is so excited to book, only to realize there are no entry-level rooms left, and the next most affordable is $700 more per person than they budgeted. It happens often, and I hate being the bearer of that bad news. 😔

And we're getting into the time of year when a whole lot of people are starting to look at the calendar and realizing that all those things they spent the summer saying were “a September problem”...

It's September. 😬

Vacation dates are getting sorted out. Groups are finally deciding where they're going. Families are looking at March Break. Couples are figuring out January and February. And they're all shopping from the same inventory.

Let's talk about the 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐨́ complex in Mexico, because I recommend these resorts ALL the time -- and I know they can be confusing. 🙃

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐨́ 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝.

Disney World is one giant property, but inside it are several different parks -- Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, etc.

Then there is:

This is a step up from the first four, with Junior Suites and Suites and its own restaurants, pools and facilities. Palace guests can use 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗣𝗟𝗨𝗦 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝟰 family-friendly resorts, but Caribe, Colonial, Beach, and Tropical 𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲.

And finally:

This is the newest, adults-only resort in the complex and sits at the top of the access food chain. 😂 If you stay at the Riviera, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗶𝘅 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 on the complex, but guests at the 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 to Riviera.

🔑 So basically:

Beach / Caribe / Colonial / Tropical → access to 4
Palace → access to 5
Riviera Adults Only → access to all 6

And yes, this place is 𝐁𝐈𝐆.

But that doesn't mean you're spending your vacation hiking from one end to the other. The resorts are connected by walking paths, a beachfront boardwalk, and complimentary double-decker buses travel throughout the complex day and night. 🚌

There is A LOT here beyond the individual hotels: multiple pools, kilometres of beachfront, restaurants and bars, theatres and entertainment, kids' facilities, sports, a shopping area, spa, nightclub, 24-hour sports bar, bowling, and more. There are even cenotes across the street from the entrance, within walking distance. 🌊

𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐨́ 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐚 𝐬𝐨 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧.

It's particularly good for families or groups where everyone doesn't necessarily want the same vacation.

The person who doesn’t want to be in a pool with noisy, splash-y children can retreat to their adults only property and visit the others later. 😂

💲If you're looking for good value, I usually start with Beach, Caribe, Colonial, or Tropical, and choose between them based on desired room category and price available for your dates.

💲💲If you want a step up and you're travelling with kids, Palace is worth comparing.

💲💲💲And if you're travelling without kids and want the nicest overall option while still having access to everything else, Riviera Adults Only is the obvious one to look at.

The important thing is that when you see six different Barceló Maya resorts come up in a search, you don't necessarily need to figure out which one has the best pool, restaurant, or evening entertainment. Depending on which section you're staying in, you may be able to use all of those things anyway.

That's what makes this complex a little confusing to explain, but also one of the reasons it's such a good option once you understand how it works.

If you’re interested in vacationing in Riviera Maya, the Barceló complex is definitely one to keep on your radar. 🌴 We loved it there and would most definitely return!
