Did you know that 89 sea otters were reintroduced to the west coast of Vancouver Island between 1969-1972? 🦦
After being extirpated by extensive hunting during the 18th century fur trade era, sea otters were absent from BC waters for close to two centuries before efforts were made to reestablish these charismatic creatures back into their natural habitat.
Originally from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, these relocated specimens created the basis for the flourishing population of over 8,000 individuals we see along BC's coast today!
