Do you know someone who loves cloth? Not just the wearing of it, but the making โ€” the smell of raw wool before itโ€™s washed, the shock of cochineal blooming red in the pot, the slow logic of a pattern that has been carried in womenโ€™s hands for a thousand years?

Send them this.

We will be based in San Cristรณbal de las Casas for ten days, and for six full days we will travel out into the highlands with Eustaquia Ruiz of Oventic โ€” award-winning weaver and curator of the Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya. Village by village, she will teach us to read the cloth the way she reads it.

Tenejapa, where the brocade runs deep red and dense with figures. Chenalhรณ, where the geometry is unmistakable once you know it. Oventic, Eustaquiaโ€™s own community. Venustiano Carranza, down where the air turns warm and the cotton grows fine. And more besides โ€” each town a dialect of the same ancient language, each one legible to a woman who has spoken it since she was a girl.

This is not a demonstration staged for visitors. These are women opening their homes and preparing lessons for us โ€” real work, freely given. That deserves a full room.

Four guests are booked. We can take four more, and no more than that. If we fill the group, we will run this tour again. If we donโ€™t, it will have happened once and never again.

We would very much like it to happen again, again and againโ€ฆ

We begin gently, with a cheese board and a vineyard. Artisan quesos from the Bajรญo in the company of an expert who hunted them down, then three small Querรฉtaro wineries โ€” reds aged in French oak, rosรฉs, and country curiosities made from raspberry, garambullo and damiana โ€” tasted among the ruins of an old hacienda beneath the great monolith of Bernal. Fortified, we climb into the Sierra Gorda, where Franciscan friars and Pame artisans raised five missions whose faรงades still argue beautifully with themselves: ears of corn among the angels, mermaids on a Christian wall, a rabbit beside a double-headed eagle. Two worlds, negotiating in plaster.

Two centuries later, the English poet Edward James walked into Xilitla, declared he had found the Garden of Eden, and spent thirty years proving it in concrete. A frost had killed his orchids, so he built flowers that could not freeze โ€” towers, staircases climbing into open air, doorways that open onto nothing but green. Nothing at Las Pozas is finished; nothing was ever meant to be. Beyond it, the jungle takes over as architect: the limestone arch and blue pools of Puente de Dios, the cascades of Tamasopo, rivers the colour of turquoise. And twice we go looking for birds in the dark. At dusk we stand on the rim of the Sรณtano de las Golondrinas, 376 metres straight down, and watch thousands of swifts fold their wings and drop into the earth. Before dawn we hike to the Sรณtano de las Huahuas, where green parakeets spiral slowly back up out of it as the jungle wakes.

For the adventurous soul who loves to hike and swim in nature while enjoying fine wine and cheese, lush gardens and a touch of history, this tour is designed for you!

Once the great Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, today a sprawling modern metropolis โ€” Mexico City takes center stage in the Smithsonian Magazine September/October 2026 issue!

Writer Tony Perrottet and photographer Alicia Vera journey through some of the city's 171 museums and hidden corners to uncover its layered history, from the world's largest collection of pre-Columbian artifacts, to ancient ruins beneath hotel lobbies, to the preserved homes of Frida Kahlo and Gabriel Garcรญa Mรกrquez.

The Erotic Rooster

In Mexican folklore, the rooster (el gallo) is a potent symbol of aggressive masculinity, machismo, pride, and virility. The artisans of Ocumicho combined the traditional rooster figurine with the transgressive, uninhibited nature of their famous devils. These sculptures frequently feature roosters sitting over human figures engaged in explicit sexual acts.

The rise of erotic imagery in Ocumicho ceramics is attributed to Marcelino Vicente, who inspired the devil iconography the village is so famous for. Though Vicente was beaten to death in 1968 in what many believe was a hate crime connected to his non-conforming sexuality and lifestyle, the women of the town have kept his legacy alive.

These roosters certainly draw a shocking smile for the unsuspecting visitors who happens to pick it up, discovering a hidden world beneath!

How do you choose an ethical tour company during Dia de Mu***os? What should you look for? And why do we think you should travel with us?

If this is the quietest Dia de Mu***os season we have experienced in 10 years - this is the year you want to come! We still have some spots left for our extended and one night tour. Please note - we are reviving La Fiesta de las Catrinas this year, with two guest chefs and a lot of pizzaz!

WEAVING THE MAYA COSMOS
From the Loom to the Stars ยท San Cristรณbal de las Casas, Chiapas - November 5โ€“15, 2026 ยท Only 8 Guests

In the Chiapas highlands, every thread tells a story. Colours and motifs woven on backstrap looms carry a cosmology older than the conquest โ€” and for ten nights, youโ€™ll learn to read that language from the women who write it.

String your own loom and weave a project from start to finish under the guidance of Doรฑa Eustaquia Ruiz โ€” FONART Prizeโ€“winning master weaver of Oventic and Curator of the Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya. Shaped by her years in the Zapatista movement, Eustaquia opens doors to remote Tsotsil and Tseltal villages few travellers ever see.

Youโ€™ll clean, card, and spin wool with the weavers of San Juan Chamula, spend a day learning ancient natural dye techniques with a respected Maya elder in San Andrรฉs Larrรกinzar, wander early-morning markets in Oxchuc and Tenejapa, and step inside Sergio Castroโ€™s legendary private textile collection.

Home base is Belaโ€™s B&B in the heart of San Cristรณbal, with Manuelaโ€™s home-cooked Chiapanecan dinners waiting at the end of select days.

$58,908 MXN per person ยท 10 nights ยท 20 meals ยท loom included (and yours to keep)

Chak-Chel as shown in the Madrid CodexThe back-strap loom is among the oldest technologies of the Americas, and it remains alive in Maya communities today, where traditional weavers have maintained an understanding of Maya cosmology and worldview across three thousand years. We have a number of upcoming tours for everyone - from a short, fun get-away to Grutas de Tolantongo to the cultural depths of Dia de Mu***os and everything between.

Our schedule is as follows, with links to our website:

DIA DE MU***OS: We have two tours that merge in Patzcuaro - one beginning in Mexico City (Oct 22-Nov 3, 2026) and the other beginning in San Miguel de Allende (Oct 25-Nov 3, 2026). If you're only in Patzcuaro for the cemetery observations, we also offer a very special cemetery & vigil tour on Nov 1-2. LINK: https://www.coppermoontravels.com/dia-de-muertos

WEAVING THE MAYA COSMOS: This special exploration of Maya textiles is led by Maya master weaver & Zapatista Doรฑa Eustaquia Ruiz, who is the curator of the Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya in San Cristobal de las Casas. This is a beautiful experience, as we are staying in San Cristobal de las Casas for the full duration of the tour, with day trips planned for a plethora of rarely visited Maya communities where you will be learning from the weavers first hand. We will weave a small project, enjoy some dye workshops and learn how wool is processed from raw material to home-spun. DATES: November 5-15, 2026
